hey guys, so my friend told me that if you use a vpn the authorities cant track you, i then stated that in cases of extreme risk that the authorities would be able to get you information even if you are using a vpn... am i wrong in what i said? i would really like to know as i have done some research but none of it is all too convincing.

they need to be able to monitor both ends of the VPN tunnel, and under the patriot act the US gov can monitor anything that traverses US soil. So just use an out of country VPN.

If you really don't want to be traced, get a VPN in a country that doesn't give a shit about internet control (old USSR countries are the most common). Other countries like Canada might be more cooperative in providing logs/traces. But you'd have to be hacking into really sensitive data for anyone to give a crap. Most VPNs won't get you busted for downloading movies and stuff, even in the US (but to be safe, go for another close country).

Yeah, as others have said, it depends on what you're doing with the VPN. In most cases, if you're trying to use it to get classified information then it's unlikely that it matters what exit country you're using. For something like pirating shit, then any outside USA exit shouldn't matter.

Some VPN providers keep logs of all sites visited/alot of connection information while others don't, some just keep connect/disconnect IPs, while some don't keep anything at all. Depends on the provider, but yeah obviously most countries offshore aren't obligated keep logs.

In the US, I'm pretty sure that if they need to get into your VPN for whatever reason, they will be able to. Though unless you give them a reason they won't bother.
