You should learn how to speed correctly. In Ohio, you can't get points on your license for going less than 10 over in a 55+ zone, so I always just go 9 over (when safe to do so obviously). Cops are less likely to give a shit.

My experience as someone from Michigan driving through Ohio was that they just keep 75 in a perpetual state of construction so they can fuck you over at any speed.

Driving a shitty car helps a lot too, cops always target the cars that look like they're fast.
I used to go to school with a guy who drove a lowered honda civic and he would complain about being pulled over like once a week.

I used to drive 40 k/h over the limit everyday to work and never got pulled over, I assume the cops see my car and think something like "let's not bother, this guy probably hates his life enough already"

Got a $250 ticket for going 40 in a 30 at 2:30am 2 years ago. I was going 35 because I know the road is a speed trap. Car behind me starts riding my ass, didn't look like a cop car so I sped up to 38...39...car still on my ass...40. Sirens.

Jerk pushed me just high enough to ticket me. Was in one of those SUV squad cars. 2am. No one on the road. 10 miles over the speed limit. He got me good.

I almost got a ticket for going 55 in an "active" construction site that had two workers walking around just checking equipment. The site was closed months before because of the winter and I just assumed it was still inactive because there were no active stoplights to reduce traffic flow like a normal site would.

Would have been about $500 dollars to pay that ticket.

It is quite the opposite. If you car looks shitty/dirty it tells people that you're lazy and don't maintain your shit meaning you're more likely to have issues with your license/registration/insurance. This is how cops think and you'll get nabbed if your car looks like shit. Don't have to be crazy just keep it clean.
edit: misread this post

On a sidenote, cops don't need any evidence if they can get you to admit you were breaking the law. This is why they ask you shit like "do you know how fast you were going?". It's not an innocent question, they're trying to get you to admit. Always play dumb and say you have no idea. They might try to guilt trip you with a "oh really? you really don't know how fast you were going?" Don't fall for it, keep playing the dumb card. Ideally you wouldn't say a single word to a cop but that can rustle their jimmies so learn to talk without saying anything.

Also, if you must speed, get another speeder to trail you so you only have to outrun the trailer and not the cop. (The maneuver in action.)

I don't know about everywhere but in NC you can ask to see the radar and if the cop forgot to lock the speed in he can't ticket you. I'm 2 for 2 getting out of it so it seems to be a common oversight.

how so? the american criminal justice system is corrupt and evil, if you voluntarily work for it you are objectively human garbage and deserve to be put to death :)

Can confirm. I live in Toledo and every. Single. Fucking. Highway is undergoing serious construction. I'm happy they will be fixed eventually, but travelling anywhere in this city is painful. I mean not as bad as major cities like LA or Chicago, but still annoying.

My cousin is a police officer and told me that the cops in his area have a saying. "5 you're fine, 10 you're mine."

They generally ignore anyone doing <10mph over the speed limit.

IMO though you should probably verify your speed with a GPS or something before assuming that whats on your dashboard is correct. Some cars can be off by up to ~3% or so. Depends on tire size and wear also.

samjain98I got pulled over for being about 15 mph above the speed limit. The officer comes over and tells me that I'm going way too fast, and asks for my license. He then asks for my registration, looks at it, then gives it back. He went back to his car with my license and came back and told me to make sure everyone in the car was wearing their seatbelt.

He didn't give me any paper or mention anything remotely about punishment. Should I expect a ticket in the mail?

In my experience they always hand you an actual ticket then you get a letter in the mail to follow up on that. So the fact that he didn't give you a ticket might mean your state is different than mine, or maybe you won't get one?

Traffic stops are one of the ways cops catch other criminals like those with warrants or suspended licenses. It's possible he was using the speeding as a valid excuse to pull you over in hopes that he might find more when he ran your ID.

If you do get a ticket in the mail you could try to contest in in court and hope the cop doesn't show up and the case is thrown out. Happens quite a bit.

Not writing tickets for minor speeding also has to do with the fact that certain states are less rigid with speeding and a lot of times its hard to reliably prove someone went only 5 MPH over. People are more likely to fight a 5 mph ticket. Its worth knowing how the speeding laws work in your state btw, since you can be stopped in a lot of states even for being under the posted speeds in adverse conditions.

But yeah like 99.99% of cops just want people to be safe. Especially since you're younger and could've plead youthful offender or w/e he likely let you go and didn't give a shit. Everyone in my state I've ever talked to says they weren't ticketed the first timer or two they got pulled over.
