I'm not sure why you think random pubbers would have such a strong affinity for highlander. I imagine the overwhelming majority of TF2 players have never touched competitive so Valve doesn't really have much to worry in terms of whether or not they alienate people. Ignoring all the logistical nightmares that make highlander extremely unattractive, I'm still not sure why Valve would choose it from a purely gameplay perspective. At its core, TF2 is a game with both general classes like soldier and specialized classes like spy where you can change class at will to fit the situation at hand. To remove that ability and force certain players to play a specialized class that may be suboptimal or largely ineffective most of the time depending on the map seems pretty dumb. I don't see a single angle where supporting highlander with matchmaking makes sense from Valve's end.

i dont think matchmaking will be implemented with the ability to queue for a certain class. I know there's the whole thing with the mm hud thing, but without some sort of official guide to how 6s is played i feel like valve'll turn away a lot of the players by having just the generalist classes being available to pick.

The team size is six players, so the lower ranks will probably be full of people who stubbornly want to play their main class. this will work for them to a certain extent, but then people who actually want to rank up will gravitate towards playing the better classes. this'll have the effect of the higher ranks being more serious and formalized while the lower ranks are either full of engineer mains or people dicking around. To me, this is the best possible system for matchmaking that doesn't alienate any of TF2's players.

plus there's the whole "JUST ONE RANK ACROSS ALL CLASSES" which could mean there's no queue for classes at all

i agree with you thats not the way to approach it, but what if instead of looking for similar class skills it goes to match you with an overall similar team skill ? wasnt it said on b4nnys video that you have an overall rating not a class based skill rating ?

With no item restrictions (seems to be the case so far) and ctf apparently being in MM, they could probably do pretty ok playing gunslinger engi on ctf and koth maps in matchmaking if they have decent shotgun aim.

Sooo, matchmaking will resemble nothing like what we all have built ourselves to play around in the past half decade? Someone pls confirm.

I would honestly think no bans 6s would be a much better bridge to comp than HL, which would be a lot more chaotic, and feature a class limit of one to each class, versus a mode that would let them play whatever they want and switch whenever they wanted to which would slowly teach them how each class works in a more organized format. Why do people keep suggesting hl, it's not like we will even get close to 6s other than the number of players.
