You can't use flat textures like that because it gives you a clear advantage over your opponent. You should be playing with the same settings as your opponent in a competition.

That's sort of silly to say that, TF2's textures are already simple yet there are a ton of problems some people have with vision that gives you an advantage over them. Some people have to turn up their gamma and colour vibrancy because their colour vision is not good enough to distinguish ground from player, or they are colour blind completely. Personally I need to wear strong glasses because I am very near-sighted. It would be easier for me to play if I had perfect vision and did not need to wear them. But I also have a 120hz monitor, which is an advantage. You can't quantify competitive advantage someone has over someone else from their point of view. Even so, there are people who play in DX8 even though it makes it harder to see stickies and make out characters, that doesn't necessarily make them worse because of it.

Replace vision problems with muscle memory/mouse and sensitivity and realize how retarded your argument is. Fuck, why do people with better genetics get to do better in sports? I can't believe we don't make it fair for handicap people too. Should make the screen black to be fair for people with eye problems like being completely blind.

PS I understand it's bringing up others unlike my example of bringing things down, but it's at the cost of "dumbing down" the game. You can make hardware and such not matter by slowing down the game. You don't though, it's just a nice option. I don't personally mind colorblind models. But we're not going to make it black vs white just for monochromats. You build for the normal person, not the handicap.

time to whip out the pretyped paragraph and send it to robin again, amirite?

this is what "low settings" should look like, I think.

sv_pure wasn't made to prevent texture mods like this. It was made to prevent texture mods like this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qxEC3MhXjAA

(Ignore the fact that it's a 4 year old poorly recorded laggy as shit video)

A pure server is one that forces all clients on the server to use content that matches what is on the server. This prevents cheating by modifying game content, e.g. increasing the size of models or volume of footsteps, or making wall materials transparent.

The only thing that would really be affected would be sticky traps in areas that are purposely hard to see. In a sense, making everything flat in Q3 or other similar games does the same thing; it increases visibility, meaning you won't get kills/advantages because the game is visually "busy", but rather because you outplayed your opponent, etc.

Anarchyif it was made to block stuff like that why cant they just let it through for people to use say the flat textures

I feel like you don't understand what you would need to do to check it (read the image file and check that every pixel is a certain RGB), and either way it adds the question why can't I mod it to be not flat? What flat colors are allowed? Why can't we make player model textures flat colors? What if checkered provided a better advantage than flat colors? Will you make the image parser allow gradients and what not?

And by that point maps become customizable and becomes harder to draw any limits.

I feel like you don't understand how important clutter is for games that aren't quake. For example, take a Battlefield 2 game or more recent. Can you imagine if every playermodel was a bright color and all the walls were gray? Would be immensely easy to see and aim at people because they tend to blend in much more than bright colors on some static gray or something. Hell, it's even possible to miss a hiding soldier on his side of the map sometimes because he blends in with the color of the wall. A lot of TF2 classes thrive on chaos, like visual clutter, to do well. Spies depend on people being visually busy to kill someone. Any class can get great flanks because of visual focus on other enemies/projectiles (providing chaos). Even in a game like CS 1.6, you could hide in the shadow and kill someone who couldn't see you clearly. Games don't allow whitewalling for a reason. This isn't quake.

People, come on now.

What is the main reason to using these textures? To see easier. OBVIOUSLY.

Do you really need to ask why they're banned? Do you really think it's fair if you're using them while other people aren't? Don't tell me you want to use them just for 'personal preference'.

We went through the same shit in TFC. It 100% helps your aim and especially awareness using textures like that and if you don't think so then there's something wrong with you. It's as simple as that. I'm so glad source has sv_pure.

while the fps thing is true, blinky does have a point.

it wouldn't be fair unless valve made these textures and option for everyone, so that it remains a level playing feild.

Flat colored textures could reduce FPS if they were hardcoded into the game. Custom textures aren't, and end up going through the exact same function calls as the non-flat textures and will end up costing the same FPS.

What's funny is that there was a gotfrag mod that flat colored everything (including props) aside from character models and the creator himself said it reduced FPS by a bit. Going to look for a source to make sure that I remember it correctly.
Meh can't find it, ignore. I don't think it was turtle's mod but I can't find any other. I might have been thinking of RivaTuner/ATI tools for low res.

But then it dumbs the game down even more than it already is. Makes hiding and flanking a lot less useful on top of other things. Don't need to fix what isn't broken.
