#1 Dawn of War Free Weekend in Other Games

http://store.steampowered.com/sale/warhammer/

For this weekend, the entire Dawn of War franchise is free to play and discounted at 75% off. I can only tell you nothing but good things about Dawn of War since I love 40k stuff but if you ever wanted to experience what the games were like (mostly single player these days since the multiplayer has a tiny scene with some pretty harsh meta), now's your chance. The Last Stand is also really fun.

new gameplay
warning: mute sound

You don't lose your "I Win" button on death and if you die mid-usage, you keep 50%. I'm not so sure how I feel about that, but at least the "I Win" buttons aren't as invincible as I thought. Random spread too, ech.

That fuckin Reinhardt gameplay tho lol, reminds me of playing Heavy in a pub.

#34 Decent Old School FPS games? in Other Games

I hope UT4 pans out well. I really just want a fun-skilled pub game again; nothing has really filled the void that T:A's death and the abysmal state of TF2 pubs have left in me.

#10 My spirit is broken in The Dumpster
reakWhy are we still here? Just to suffer? Every night, I can feel my leg... and my arm... even my fingers. The body I've lost... the comrades I've lost... won't stop hurting... It's like they're all still there. You feel it, too, don't you? I'm gonna make them give back our past.

#9 Rain LFT s20/GXL scout in Recruitment (looking for team)

I know Rain is gonna get -fragged because people just see him as a cocky little fuck but I can tell all teams LF a scout this after our scrims and matches together:

Positives:

  • He's got impeccable DM for Open; there are a lot of scouts in the lower echelons of this game to pick but if you need someone who you can rely on for DM, Rain's your boy.
  • He's incredibly dedicated to whatever team he's on.
  • He's got that teenage commitment to TF2 where he can just DM 'till his eyes bleed.
  • Rain is generally a fun person to be around even though he's got that teenage awkwardness thing going on.

Negatives:

  • He doesn't really talk about what he's fighting, even though he's been working on it. On this point, he doesn't ask for help fighting things until he finds himself balls-deep within the opposing team and then frantically says "DAT HEAL ME HEAL ME".
  • It took us all of last season to keep him from going permasniper on last holds after watching demos and explaining why him playing sniper in shitty situations wasn't a good idea, especially when we were at big uber disadvantage, and would stay Sniper for entire last holds until we lost our playoffs match. Granted he stopped this, but it took an entire season and a playoffs loss for this to happen. Just be careful that he doesn't regress because it added some grey hairs to my head to get him to stop and I'm not even out of my 20s.
  • He'll generally remain silent during demo reviews and then pipe up mid-demo review OK LET'S SCRIM when there's a lull in discussion. Happened less after the post-playoffs sitdown but still happened.
  • His command of the strategy part of TF2 isn't particularly strong and like Tojo said in his LF mentor thread, Rain would be amazing if he had a mouth and a brain. This is compounded by the fact that he'd rather snipe in pubs rather than watch a PoV on his own.

Closing thoughts:
I'm not sure where to put this, but our main issue with Rain is that he'd sometimes vanish for days at a time without warning; granted most of them have been hardware related but it took this last straw for him to tell me that he gave me the wrong phone number when we all first exchanged numbers. Apparently his phone was broken too? I dunno. It happened enough to the point where we've had to play with scout combos that weren't ours for days at a time and for those ringers at our level, weren't scout mains. I'm 300% not calling that the sole reason why we've been on an impeccable loss streak because it really isn't as much as other factors, but it was really annoying.

This is my honest assessment. He's a great addition to a mid/high/playoffs-bound Open team, but not an IM one. None of us are, really, but he's definitely included.

saamif someone is going missing for extended periods of time and it happens on a regular basis it might be time to just find a new starter man

That's exactly what is happening right now.

#12 Let's try to point out WHAT MAKES A GOOD 6s MAP in Map Discussion
rowrowEDIT: I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure valve has videos talking about the design and effort put into maps, and why maps were designed a certain way

The developer commentary for TF2 is particularly interesting because it addresses the artistic aspects of map design in terms of drawing attention to viable paths of attack. However, they also talk about why spawn gates worked for pubs, so I wouldn't read into them as gospel for competitive map design. Overall, the developer commentary is legitimately super interesting for learning about what goes into designing a game.

For the OP, I'd say that having intelligent ammo/health placement is a key product of map design: since TF2 doesn't have anything like the instantaneous effects of Quad Damage (Kritzkrieg requires building charge), health packs play a pretty important role as one of the two sole kinds of pickups in TF2. It's good to have an incentive for attacking players to take a risk to push up but also provides a safety net for defending players; Process IT's medium kit is a good example of this. However, having kits/ammo packs that are super close together can become a particularly bad idea really fast; I think an early version of Vanguard had a medium kit and medium ammo on a ground floor and a level that was a quick rocket-jump above it also had a medium kit and ammo pack.
