Whoops, that's on me. So much bs in this thread I get confused. Also I'll be honest, a spectator feature is mostly for tournaments. I really don't think a whole lot of people open their game client going "WHELP TIME TO WATCH SOME VIDEO GAMES!" when they could just as easily watch a stream and get a lot more from it.
And I don't know, you're probably right, the numbers (like in TF2) are wrong, they must be doing nothing right.

defianceriot took years to get spectating in, and you still can't even open spectate any game, the only way to spec games are still by joining off of friends. so you can't actually spectate competitive games unless its being streamed or you have them on your list (like matches that aren't the highest of levels).
On the main menu screen it cycles through multiple high ELO matches (usually 2000+ ELO) and you can openly spectate them all.

the scene is artificial as fuck and will die the second riot fails to buy their way into a tournament. top players have openly admitted they're only in it for the money.
the tournaments are a joke - hello, the top two teams were both confirmed for cheating on lan by riot
game is shit players are shit anyone who actually likes it is a turd
Riot is getting so much money that they'd have no reason to stop supporting it. And the mistake made at the WC was (and will continue to be corrected) the same how it was in a few Starcraft tournaments. And only one of the top teams was confirmed for cheating.

tf2 forces me to restart steam before i can play

Yeah if you play games (such has Borderlands 2, recently) most of the time they emulate Steam or something via a DLL (as far as I know) and you'll have to restart your Steam before you can play online again. It's harmless but annoying. I've had this issue with a pirated copy of CS:S and a few other games.
