You can change the visible and enabled values of "HealthBuffBG" and "HealthLowBG" inside hudplayerhealth.res to 0 and "AmmoLowBG" inside hudammoweapons.res.
It's a stylistic choice, and one I intend to keep, but several people have said they don't like it so I may make them less vibrant or more transparent in a future update.
