#42 woolhud v2 in Customization

Blungo

People on this subforum have a weird pet peeve about anyone starting a new thread for HUDs they don't consider to be original enough. It's as if there's some sort of standard that you have to meet in order to gain the privilege of releasing a HUD. I mean, these guys use the terms "beta" and "official release" like they're being paid to write vital software or something.

If I were you I would have posted this HUD in the HUD Mods thread. But at the end of the day it actually doesn't matter. Make/modify whatever the hell HUDs you want, and "release" them however the hell you want. Just make sure you give credit where credit is due, which I think you've done.

JarateKingI spent over a year getting better at making huds without releasing things

I think this is where a lot of the animosity comes from. People spend a ton of time building HUDs from the ground up. It takes a crazy amount of time and patience--only to get a few upvotes before fading into the background and largely being forgotten. When someone else comes on the scene, they act like you have to earn your stripes like they did. (No disrespect to JarateKing, I'm sure his HUDs are very well-made.)

thi4g0Any guy can give me link for this hud Amazing http://imgur.com/a/lHaeA#63

WOW that's funny I just happened to be browsing here. I made this in August of 2013. I think this was before the update that added the high five taunt so I'm fairly certain this HUD will crash your game when someone kills you and you see the freezepanel. I could be wrong though. Here it is anyway.

#3 Found a box of old VHS tapes... in Videos

With the trend in FPS video editing moving towards some murky puddle of smooths and syncs, this is so refreshing Although "retro" isn't the most original concept, it actually has clear vision and competent execution. This is a "frag" video in a sea of "fwag" videos. Really well done, can't wait to see more.

#19 LF Recommendations on Mouse + Mousepad in Hardware

I don't know if I would call the gtf speed a hybrid pad. The way I see it, hybrid pads use some combination of silicone and textile for the surface. I own the gtf and it's just a conventional fabric surface. It's "fast" because it's very tightly woven and it's attached to a glossy plastic backing. There's no cushion to it, so I guess in a way it feels more like a hardpad. It's a nice product don't get me wrong and the fastest cloth pad I've used. But when you say "hybrid" I think you're referring to something else.

The problem is the way TF2 does outlines. That is to say, poorly. If you want good looking outlined characters you have to do it gmang style. Start with the white foreground character, then put the same character in black behind it but one pixel to the left. Then repeat with three more black characters, one each to the right, up, and down. And you get what basically looks like an outline but is really four separate drop shadows.

#4080 Show your HUD modifications! in Customization

My HUD. I stole the CTF HUD & round timers from BroeselHUD; I got some other ideas from 7HUD and YaHUD. Didn't change any menus, loadout, backpack or trading panels. This HUD probably wont work for MvM or on a Mac. Also didn't touch tournament mode stuff--chances are Valve will overhaul all of that not too long from now. Stopwatch functions and is visible but is out of position because I can't figure out how to work on it without playing actual lobbies.

#23 Quake Live rumored gameplay changes in Other Games
OrangecakeCorrect me if I'm wrong, but isn't comp. Quake only active in the highest levels right now?

Based on my experience, absolutely. I've been playing duels regularly (low tier, I'm bad) and I have yet to play the same person twice. No newbie duelers seems to be sticking with the game at all. On the other hand, 9 out of 10 people I play seem to be veterans with at least a few years experience, who are "slumming" and joining lower skill servers. The excuse is always the same: "But there's nobody else to play."

This results in a situation where the scene is very "top heavy" I guess? Where most people are quite experienced and for one reason or another always play newbies, so none of the newbies stick around because, let's face it, repeatedly losing 25 to -2 aint too enjoyable.

What I'm saying is the only way to fix that is to do something extreme. Call it selling out, call it what you will, it's the only solution. Just based on my limited experience.

Items have taller pickup collision boxes, so that players will not miss items as they jump over them.

please christ almighty

speculating on anything else is pretty useless at this point

but to be honest some drastic steps need to be taken for this game to go anywhere; if id is scared of "alienating" veterans as Kairu says quake will continue to stagnate

#116 The Mouse/Mousepad Thread (last updated Sep. 9, 2013) in Hardware

Alanny I have the EC1 evo and this qck+ and I've experienced some weird tracking issues at really slow speeds. I'll be moving the mouse diagonally down and to the left and it will intermittently snap to a totally vertical angle. The mouse tracks perfectly on my gt-f speed. Either way I've been continuing to use the qck for now because it hasn't actually affected me in-game at all. You never really move your mouse that slow.

The g-tf speed is a pretty nice pad, by far the fastest cloth pad I've used. Although it's strange because it has no "cushion." It's just a hard cloth weave over a slick plastic backing. It's smaller than the goliathus/talent/qck as well. But it stays in one place on your desk as reliably as any of them.

To my knowledge you can't change the color of a VTF once you've saved it. If you want a green gradient for example, you have to start with a green .png, then import it into VTFEdit and save it as its own .vtf. Every different color VTF you see in my HUD is its own separate file.

The same goes for the default TF2 HUD when you have certain materials that change between red and blue depending on your team. That isn't the same file changing color. It's just that when you are on Red one file is active, and when you're on Blue a different file is active.

Thanks guys.

Making VTFs is pretty straightforward. You can make any image into a VTF. So say you want to take some polka-dot thing and put it in your HUD, all you do is save it as jpg, and then go into VTFEdit and File --> Import that file. Once you've imported it you just save it as .vtf.

The only hang-up is that your jpg has to start out with width and height dimensions that are powers of 2 (2 4 8 16 32 and so on up to 4096). 256x32 for example. Otherwise you will have to clamp it in VTFEdit which will result in some unwanted distortion.

Once that is done you just make a simple .vmt to go with your .vtf. You can just copy one of my .vmts, change the name to match that of your VTF, and then use VTFEdit to change the "$basetexture" line to point to your .vtf. And that's it you just put them in the \materials\vgui\replay\thumbnails folder and you're good to go.

If you want to use transparency in your VTF you have to start out with a PNG or Targa (.tga) because those support transparency. As far as using GIMP or Photoshop to make images in the first place, TBH all I know how to do in GIMP is to make those gradients you see. Pretty basic stuff I am by no means an expert. This is how the PNG looks after I make it in GIMP. Flip it horzontally in GIMP to get the other side, you get the idea.
