I made six (6) HUDs this summer. All but the very last one are edited versions of Broesel's HUD, so they preserve pretty much all the functionality and customization of BroeselHUD 2.7. Check the readmes that come with the HUDs to see what else you can change.

All of these HUDs were tested on 1600x900, 1440x900, 1280x720, 1366x768, 1024x768, 800x600, and 640x480. They should work on any resolution and any aspect ratio, but for the record I haven't been able to test them on any resolution larger than 1600x900.

The next three HUDS started as BroeselHUD just the same but are significantly more customized. As you can see I like the PVHUD style of having the health and ammo numbers large and at the bottom of the screen. I also prefer to have the itemeffect meters out of the way. I didn't know what to call them, so I named them after some of my former students (yes I am a schoolteacher).

Barrie The one who was pretty consistent and would get the job done.

I worked a summer at LG (in one of the HQs no less) and I gotta say...the feeling of the HUD is scarily spot on, colors, fonts and all. Mad props.

I might finish that lg hud if some one could teach me how to make those vtf things. I have gimp and vtf edit installed I just need to make the files.

Thanks guys.

Making VTFs is pretty straightforward. You can make any image into a VTF. So say you want to take some polka-dot thing and put it in your HUD, all you do is save it as jpg, and then go into VTFEdit and File --> Import that file. Once you've imported it you just save it as .vtf.

The only hang-up is that your jpg has to start out with width and height dimensions that are powers of 2 (2 4 8 16 32 and so on up to 4096). 256x32 for example. Otherwise you will have to clamp it in VTFEdit which will result in some unwanted distortion.

Once that is done you just make a simple .vmt to go with your .vtf. You can just copy one of my .vmts, change the name to match that of your VTF, and then use VTFEdit to change the "$basetexture" line to point to your .vtf. And that's it you just put them in the \materials\vgui\replay\thumbnails folder and you're good to go.

If you want to use transparency in your VTF you have to start out with a PNG or Targa (.tga) because those support transparency. As far as using GIMP or Photoshop to make images in the first place, TBH all I know how to do in GIMP is to make those gradients you see. Pretty basic stuff I am by no means an expert. This is how the PNG looks after I make it in GIMP. Flip it horzontally in GIMP to get the other side, you get the idea.

Thanks for the help. How did you change the color of the vtfs? You could add me to help me make vtfs and finish the hud!

To my knowledge you can't change the color of a VTF once you've saved it. If you want a green gradient for example, you have to start with a green .png, then import it into VTFEdit and save it as its own .vtf. Every different color VTF you see in my HUD is its own separate file.

The same goes for the default TF2 HUD when you have certain materials that change between red and blue depending on your team. That isn't the same file changing color. It's just that when you are on Red one file is active, and when you're on Blue a different file is active.
