Generic pnp monitor problem?

Does he have multiple monitors? In the screen resolution window, before clicking "Advanced Settings", make sure he has the correct monitor selected, otherwise it will only give you refresh rate options for the other monitor. It will list itself as "Generic PnP monitor" with almost any monitor; that just means it doesn't require any drivers.
Also, are you sure he has the right monitor? the 144hz is the VG248QE.
