#211 Scream Fortress VIII has arrived in TF2 General Discussion
Smesithe only reason why i wanted to play this new update is to do the contracts and they dont even work lmao gj

And the hilarious thing is they were literally already in the game from last Halloween and now they don't work and the fix to get them to work also doesn't work.

#132 Scream Fortress VIII has arrived in TF2 General Discussion

I thought all this matchmaking business was because they didn't like 6s for some reason and wanted to make their own version of comp TF2 even though we playtested the game for 9 years but with this change its obvious they have absolutely no fucking clue what they're doing and are just throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks.

Really hope they start listening to us soon (or better yet, put several actual 6s players in charge of comp MM as community managers or some shit) or this game is gonna fucking die because after 9 years of supporting a game you need to be getting shit right or people are gonna leave. You most certainly can't fucking experiment with trial and error. Especially with how much Blizzard is getting right with Overwatch in regard to community communication and active use of a beta testing environment.

Valve please listen to us or you're legit gonna kill this game.

#232 The State of TF2, Post-Valve Meetings in TF2 General Discussion
MR_SLINGiven this information though, I think that we would actually want their game to "cannibalize" ours (to use your term) because we want a developer supported game. Can you explain to me why you wouldn't want our version of the game to die in favor of theirs? If they make improvements to the format, I think that we should accept their game.

You saw what a shitfest The Global Whitelist™ was and you think abandoning our version of 6s for Valve's shitty no-customisation-allowed, no class limits, poorly optimised, payload-is-a-gamemode-that'll-work-in-6s-guys-we-promise version of 6s won't entirely nuke the scene and end a decade of hard work?

#217 The State of TF2, Post-Valve Meetings in TF2 General Discussion
Spyromancer[...] and let us do our own thing. We've already proven that we know what we're doing[...]

Pretty much this. 9 years of play testing and actual player feedback (not just data like % of players playing a certain class which doesn't really tell you anything about whether its under powered or just not fun to play ie: meaningful player feedback is way fucking better but harder to get BUT WE ALREADY HAVE 9 YEARS OF IT SO IT DOESN'T MATTER) and we found that 6s is basically the most fun and balanced gamemode (and we keep highlander around as our little retarded brother because who doesn't love gamemodes create for the sole reason of the "One of each class" gimmick even if it boils down to like 3 or 4 of the classes because completely useless and the rest of the team playing around the sniper DAE 6s stale meta xd) and we've basically got class limits sorted out (although they seem pretty arbitrary and completely understand Valve being hesitant to implement them because a new player won't understand the reasoning behind allowing 2 sniper but only 1 medic even though they're both in the support category but why they didn't implement a blanket 2 class limit as a starting point and work forward from there I'll never know).

Yet Valve still doesn't take any of this feedback into account so its clear they're either completely fucking retarded (and they're working for Valve so I highly doubt this is the case) or they REALLY don't like the current form of 6s, even though we've found it to be the most fun. If the latter is the case, we need to be very wary about further collaboration with Valve if we don't want to see our way of playing the game cannibalised. We should just follow Thorin's advice and keep playing the game, because if we all still want to play it, it'll always be there.

also why the fuck are people discussing new gamemodes like wtf ahahaha are you fucking serious i thought we agreed that was a dumb fuck idea when RW told us to be more like our older brother dota and use a pick ban system for weapons lmao

#25 No Hats Mod in Customization
xJeebsxJim_DoskiSorry if you get asked this all the time, but is there any way to give everybody back their default headgear? So when I use this mod, the Sniper, Engineer, Soldier and Scout all appear "bald", if you get what I mean. It's very depressing because the default hats which were a part of their original designs gave them so much character. Those default hats were an important part of those class designs - chosen by an artist who really knew what he/she was doing. I would love to see them again if possible. It might be possible to replace everyone's hat with the default hat for that particular class. That's something I'll have a look into. Although I'm not entirely sure if the default hats contain any code since they're technically not an item in the game. They're just a part of the player model. I'll still see what I can find though.

I got this to work around a year ago and it works basically as you said. Default hats have their own model in the files so if you decompile a hat file, replace the model with the default hat model (or any part of a characters body that can be turned on and off, like Scout's feet or Pyro's head) (this bit gets a bit fucky when multiple styles are concerned, where each style disables different body groups eg: Backwards Ballcap removes Scout's cap and headset independently of each other but FOR SOME FUCKING REASON you can just combine the two models for Scout's cap and his headset into one file in something like Blender and use this to replace the Backwards Ballcap's model), then recompile.

Place the new model in a .vpk like the normal No Hats Mod and Bob's your uncle. You don't even need to replace textures (once again, FOR SOME FUCKING REASON) because the game somehow know's what texture to use when you change ONLY THE MODEL file, EVEN if you combine 2 existing models into 1 model (like with Scout's headset and cap) the game will still correctly apply textures even though the new model doesn't even exist in the games files. I have no idea how it ever worked but it did, even on sv_pure 2 WITHOUT preloading.

Unfortunately it took multiple minutes to complete one hat because you can't just replace it with an empty file, and all LODs (usually around 3 of them) need to be replaced some hats had different styles so you really had to set aside an hour or 2 just to do like 10 to 20 hats. And I was doing this at the point when Valve was releasing like 20+ hats for EVERY holiday event, plus community events and comp medals and with the backlog of nearly 1000 hats I basically gave up because I didn't have the time.

I'm also hesitant about giving away detailed instructions because I'm pretty sure you don't have to replace hat models with default bodygroups, so you could replace people's hats with massive street lamps and see them over walls and shit in sv_pure 2 with no preloading, just using a regular .vpk, which would be a great way for Valve to finally tighten up on hat removal mods due to exploiting (like with animation replacements) and end what everyone else has slaved over for years, so I'd only tell someone who I know will only use this method to replace hats.

#26 Looking for keyboard recommendation in Hardware

Big keyboard nerd here:

Don't get Corsair boards if little things like key wobble annoy you because those things have the shittest key caps and a non-standard bottom row so aftermarket not-shit keycaps are hard to find and usually require you to buy extra add-on kits along with the standard to kit to get every key. Cooler Master and Ducky seem to have the best caps, with Cooler Master using thick ABS keycaps (cheaper plastic that wears away after a few months, leaving greasing smooth caps) and Ducky using PBT keycaps (more expensive plastic usually only found on aftermarket keycap sets. A big bonus to include these out of the box. They're more textured and won't wear away pretty much forever (source: used 3 decade old Model Ms with no obvious texture degradation)). Corsair seems to have Reddit enamored with their boards but honestly Razer boards have better caps IMO.

On the subject of key wobble: all Cherry keyswitches and most mechanical key switches in general have it bad, due to the large number of moving parts that need to slide past each other requiring large tolerances. Membrane keyboards have 1 moving part, which usually only deforms instead of undergoing any actual movement. Topre switches might be your thing but Topre boards start at like $300USD and don't click so lol.

If you're after a light clicky switch that doesn't require you to make a custom board using obscure, end-of-line switches, Cherry MX Blues are your only option. Their p nice. I'd like to spread some information about other Cherry switches incase you change your mind about the switch you want: the best switch for gaming is the best switch for typing. Switches won't make you better in the same way a mouse with a decent optical sensor will, so go with whatever feels best. Cherry MX Reds aren't designed for typing at all, and were made for industrial machine control pads. They're fucking awful and provide absolutely no tactile feedback which for a mechanical keyboard, which has an actuation point distinct from its maximum travel, is super dumb. Reds have been hyped by 'xX_GaMiNg_Xx' marketing as super fast but they're bad. Browns are like Blues but not clicky, but due to a change in manufacturing, browns made in the last 2 decades or so (ie: fucking all of them available today) have a less tactile actuation point, resulting in a 'mushy' feel similar to membrane keyboards so don't get these. Cherry MX Clears are slightly heavier than browns but retain a not-shit tactile feeling and are becoming more popular because of this. Also, all mechanical switches are loud as fuck if you bottom them out, like most people do. The sound of bottoming a switch out is way louder than the click of Blues so don't get reds or browns because you want a quiet board. There is no such thing as a quiet mechanical keyboard.

Also LEDs are super dumb and burn out after like 6 months to a year so don't buy a keyboard for LEDs. And be sure to look into alternative form factors like TKL, 60%, and my favourite, 65%.

#43 Valve, TF2 prize money and us in TF2 General Discussion

Until Valve themselves issues a statement we can't be truly sure of their plans.

But the way I see it is, if Valve are truly waiting for the game to reach its optimal game mode, they have no fucking clue of how to treat TF2 and we should all ditch ANY expectations we have and give up on the idea of this game ever being a big esport, because we've been playtesting this broken-ass game for 9 fucking years and we've basically figured out how it should work, sans the mythical perfect whitelist (and we'll probably never reach it because of balance changes and personal preferences etc) (obligatory "fuck global whitelist").

Yeah, we could play more of x map, and ditch y map because its literal AIDS, but in terms of rulesets we've pretty much got it figured out and if Valve can't see that, then they're either going to take way too long to reach the same conclusions on how the game should be played that we have and the game will die off, or they change the way the game is played and honestly fuck that after sinking several thousand hours into this game and being in the LOWER quartile for total play time in the comp community there is absolutely no way that we don't know what's best for this game. If Valve can't see that, we're fucked either way.

Valve pls use our rules because Overwatch is so shit I just wanna airstrafe and have customisation and have movement that isn't poopy tyty.

#27 offline shooters like tf2 in Other Games
SnivyBlack Mesa, it's a really good HD remake of Half-Life 1

Seeing as you play TF2 you probably don't care about graphics so I'd suggest the original HL1 over Black Mesa. Black Mesa lacks the final levels of the game and has poop tier movement compared to HL1.

Seriously though HL1 is fantastic and has a fairly active modding community so there are loads of custom campaigns to play through and their download sizes are tiny because the game is from 1998. Also see Bunnymod Pro to make bhops work the same way as they did when first released (you can still bhop on the current Steam version but its capped at a certain speed and you lose much more speed when hitting the ground).

Half Life 1 is better because it has bunnyhopping but Half Life 2 is pretty great as well. Silly article.

This happened with me as well. Disable Wake On Lan (WOL). I can't remember how I did it but from memory there are a boatload of guides to find through a Google search and the setting is buried somewhere in Windows settings. gl.

Half Life 1 is the best Half Life because bhopping. Half Life 2 feels like the ground is covered in glue.

They're both fucking amazing though.

#31 Biannual iseries idea feat. NA in TF2 General Discussion

Instead of stickers where new technology needs to be implemented (and we all see how well this is going with weapon skins) why not use a cosmetic pin with a team logo on it? No new technology needed and community members can make mock-ups and stuff.

#32 TF2 ranked higher then Overwatch in TF2 General Discussion

Gameplay wise TF2 is obviously the better game and I think most people, when looking at both games objectively, will agree with that.

But seriously you need to read all 100 entries for that list its fucking hilariously pathetic.

Rocket League at number 8 with Half Life 1 at like 50 or some shit I fucking love games journalists dude.

#4 Question about using a monitor on Mac in Q/A Help

You won't be able to connect through HDMI because it only supports 60Hz but your MacBook looks like it has Thunderbolt so you'll be able to go from mini displayport to full displayport to the monitor using a single cable like this.
