aerosolscrewbag why not play a more recent game

The game with the closest gameplay to comp TF2 is Quake Champions and it's even more dead than TF2.

I feel like at this point TF2 needs a dev reset on a new engine. The core gameplay is MOSTLY fine but with all the dumb useless shit haphazardly tacked on the game runs like trash, looks like trash, and has some significant balance issues.
I would love a TF2 dev reset to contain the following.

  • A new engine with modern lighting effects, tessellation, the ability to support higher res textures and more items/particle effects without shitting the bed, and modern netcode.
  • Embrace the generalist/specialist class design. Stop trying to shoehorn the specialist into being generalist.
  • Start from scratch. Only keep iconic items that have a significant impact on gameplay or move there effects to base stats.
  • COMPLETE OVERHAUL OR REMOVAL/REPLACEMENT OF THE PYRO CLASS
  • Integrate a TF2 lobby-like system into the main menu with free Valve hosted servers
  • No more casual matchmaking. This game is niche and the community is it's lifeblood. Replace with game finder with community endorsed pubs/Valve official pubs
  • REMOVE POINTLESS RANDOM ELEMENTS FROM THE GAME

I know this is pointless and Valve will never see it but i think we should possibly start preparing for a post-Valve Team Fortress community with a possible Open source unofficial spiritual successor to TF2 if Valve insist on leaving this game to rot.

mastercomsCS:GO has much more restricted options than TF2, yet it's a huge esport. The only thing that's really killing the competitive scene is the lack of a Valve backed tournament. Money shifts a lot of things around and makes people able to ignore annoyances.

Sure, we could also have some optimizations to the game like CS:GO has had, but really just a Valve tournament would be enough.

CS:GO doesn't run like a trash can without a GFX config. CS:GO doesn't force different settings in competitive and casual. CS:GO is not derived from Quake where people actually care about being able to disable viewmodels. CS:GO isn't projectile based so using there default net settings doesn't cripple you. CS:GO didn't have these settings which the competitive comunity has been playing with for the better part of a decade to begin with. It's not comparable.

Stochast1cHonestly, I think a large majority of the playerbase play the game below 30fps.

This is definitely something that needs some serious addressing by Valve. As much as i hate Overwatch at least it runs great on the vast majority of semi modern systems without a gfx config. Hell i would argue that Overwatch @ 144fps feels a LOT smoother than TF2 at 200+. I imagine the pub community is feeling this even more than we are (gfx configs are prolific in competitive + lower player count).

BrockeXtineJust remove the graphic restrictions and boom people would play it.
not just that, fov restrictions, no forced viewmodels. just treat it the same as casual at least. que times would go up and everything would be faster. and maybe not punish so hard for leaving the game, because when you get stuck playing against a hacker (sometimes multiple) its a. leave and get banned for a week or b. loose and go down in rank

If Valve would actually do something about the hackers that wouldnt even be an issue. Sadly getting Valve to do ANYTHING productive is like pulling teeth. For example the det bug still exist.

Nobody plays it and it gives people the wrong impression of the TF2 competitive scene. If they are not going to actively develop for it they should just remove it. As it stands the ingame comp mode causes more harm than good.

VirgilscrewB brother i really don't think doubling down on the whole "yea it's cool to wanna fuck 11-14 year olds as a 28 year old man" is a good idea i'm gonna be real with you

That isn't what i said. In fact i am certain that i have said REPEATEDLY that i have no interest whatsoever in IRL anything. People who go after children are irredeemable degenerates and should be permanently placed in prison or a mental hospital.
