#24 Elaborate new phising scheme in TF2 General Discussion
sky_How did firefly end up losing the cs stuff if you guys were trading the unusual?

Same way I lost the unusual. I can't say why he would trade me his csgo stuff I don't even own csgo lol. We usually ask each other for things and borrow items from each other. Well I guess not anymore.

FuzzyIf someone is willing to accept you trading your stuff to a friend (or anyone that isn't a steamrep middleman) as any proof of anything, you are getting scammed. They also like impersonating middlemen, so you have to watch out for that as well. This was pretty popular a couple years ago and it's apparently making a comeback with enough people not falling for the "add this guy staemcomunilrty.com/whatever"; phishing link anymore.

And steam probably isn't gonna help with this since your account wasn't hijacked. Shit sucks.

I knew most ways people could fish, I'm not stupid. But this caught me really off guard. It was just me trading a friend. Stupid shit idk how it works. If we don't get our stuff back I'm probably just gunna give all my shit to firefly. I am more or less to blame for him getting into this mess. He has lost A LOT of money and I don't really have any use for hats n stuff.

I must be the only one here that actually got his hat back. Probably because it was complete cancer anyway hahaha.

He removed me, so I guess now would be a good as time as any to say he was very two-faced. He was a nice person to talk to for awhile, but descended into a cocky dm hound. He denied everything bad said about him, especially when he was supposedly shit talking me and leaky. Idk if he did and idc really.
I used to be the same way so I can't say much.

As for the hat stuff, I had no idea it was this bad. He has definitely lost my respect if what everyone says in this thread is true.

crossfireis it possible the scammer made two replica accounts of you and firely, he then joined a steam group that you two were in and messaged/traded you via the group. you never got a friend request from anyone because you were never on his friends list when he traded/messaged you on the fake account.

I guess. I don't know much about how all the different sorts of trading work, but that could've happened definitely. I was completely baffled as was firefly. Sucks because we used to trade each other lots of stuff like unusual hats to wear for the night or something. Not willing to do that again.

What doesn't change is that we got the trade requests in the chatboxes to each other.

kaceHellbentclorgso the guy who added you changed his name and profile to look like your friends and you fell for it? why would you give the hat back to your friend after you had already done what he said? why would your friend demand for your hat back?
No the people we traded our shit to we never added in the first place. It was like me and firefly were trading each other.
Me and firefly are pretty close friends, we usually just trade each other stuff anyways so we didn't give a second thought as to why exactly we wanted to trade. Firefly is the only person I would trust enough to give him my unusual so there's that.

Odd that he directed you to trade with him. Was it his suggestion "trade with firefly" or did you say who would trade with "I'm trading with firefly" ? Perhaps he looked at your trade history and saw that you traded with him the most.

No, it was just a vague "trade it to a friend of yours"

GetawhaleI just want to try to confirm exactly the steps of what happened because it's not super clear

This guy targeted you both, created accounts to look like both of yours

Then gave you each the same pitch, and so you sent your unusual to the scammer that looked like your friend, via trade requests, and vice versa?

Or am I way off base

He targeted me, asked me to trade the hat to one of my friends and send him the steam ID so he could add him as well. I was talking to my friend prior to him actually adding me. No one new added me and there was no new messages. Just 2 chatboxes of me to my friend, and of me to the scammer.

Me and my friend basically just bounced trades back and forth because his team was scrimming. I was thinking that the guy messaged my friend to get the hat back from me so I accepted a trade that popped up INSIDE me and my friends chatbox. It was exactly as if my friend asked me to trade. So I finished the trade giving my friend the hat.

I then opened his inventory and he didn't have it, and then he starts bugging me for his stuff back because the guy just removed him. My friend said that I asked for his items.

I never once traded anybody that wasn't my friend. No trades occurred outside of that 1 chatbox.

That's what happened. Everything past that is speculation on my part of how the hell did this actually happen.

MasterKuniThat is an insanely elaborate scam. Is this like organized crime or kids who got tired of runescape scamming?

If you were talking to a good friend of yours and then they sent you a trade request which pops up inside the chat window you're talking to each other in, how would you know it's your friend trading you and not some alt with the same alias that you don't even have added? This is elaborate imo, because it is some sort of Steam glitch that I had no idea about.

FayngWait so he added you, made you trade it to your friend, then he traded your friend for the unusual? I am kind of confused.

No we never traded the original guy. Me and my friend (firefly) were just bouncing back trades to one another basically. He must've created 2 separate accounts with our same names and alias' and somehow traded us, but the trade he sent us popped up in me and firefly's chat window to each other.

eeeKinda late now but if you're worried about shit like this you could use steam nicknames to differentiate people in the chat window.

It was in the chat window. Like a white popup inside the chat window that opened up a trade with me and some other guy with the same name and profile picture. At least that's what I think happened. There is no other explanation. Some Steam flaw probably?

Please read. It is important that everyone reads this. Send it to your friends.

So someone added me willing to buy my unusual that I've been trying to sell for like 8-9 months with tf2keys. Basically he demanded that I trade my unusual to my friend so he could have some sort of 'report'. I don't know what he was talking about I just wanted to get rid of this piece of shit.

So I traded it to my friend, and then asked him to trade it back to me so he did. After that my friend sent me another trade request for the hat so I gave it to him, then the guy who originally added me removed me.

Now, my friend is bugging me for his stuff back when I did not trade him, and he doesn't have my unusual that I just traded to him.

I am out a cloud 9 grenadiers softcap, and my friend is out 18 csgo keys and 1 karambit csgo knife case hardened (~350$).

All I can think what went down is he created alt accounts exactly as ours (same alias', same profile pictures, etc) then asked us to trade without adding us. Steam did not open a separate chat window, I was 100% certain I was trading my friend back my unusual, as he was 100% certain he was trading me his stuff. The trade popups occured WITHIN our chat boxes to our friends and we both did not add anybody except this original trader, aliased as "AlexisSuzumiya's" the entire time, not changing his profile picture nor his alias.

Just be wary that this can happen. I'm not sure if I can get my stuff back or if my friend (firefly) can get his. I'm much more worried for him as he did lose a massive ~350$ worth of csgo stuff.

I guess I open a steam ticket? Iunno I've never been scammed before and thought I would never be. This is a huge flaw in Steam.

This is his account anyways. http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198122486972/

EDIT: I think the craziest part about this is your friend could trade you and you would have no idea if it's actually your friend trading you or some alt. I guess you could click on the profile picture inside the trade to figure out if it's your friend or not. Shit's fucked.

EDIT2: Wow I spelt phishing wrong and I just noticed I'm retarded
