on the offchance any of you messed around with bitcoins a few years ago and forgot about it, they've inflated to around $250 a piece. it's impossible to tell how long its price will rise, but if you weren't aware and you have some it is probably a good idea to sell them off

#10 What kind of utter moron bought bitcoins in this obviously speculative bubble? Holy shit.

edit: I mean, no offense if anyone bought any bitcoin recently or anything. Except, you know, you might be a moron. But whatever makes you happy.

The situation? Prices are likely to drop. Bitcoin mining rates will always be slower and slower due to the nature of the code. The only thing this "situation" will do for you is get worse. Find a better way to make money for server parts.

I guess I might as well mine, since its free, but seems pretty risky to invest money in it.

Enjoy mining at a loss, there's no way you can compete with the FPGA and mining farms people have. Also the ASICs that are coming

3 years ago people decided to make a nonphysical currency that could be transferred around online without regulation. "value" would be made through processing power(electricity + computer cycles devoted towards mining). efficiency of mining decreases exponentially overtime until x amount of coins are in the market(idk the number)

back then a bitcoin was worth less than a dollar and you could mine several a day on weak computers quite easily. these days your average streamer computer could probably get .005 alone in a day which doesn't beat electricity costs. anyways it was in the news a lot over the past couple weeks and bubbled from around $40 two weeks ago to a high of around $280 last night. Now it's crashing and a bunch of plebeians are losing a lot of money

it's 21 mil
and the reward halves on every x block, I think it was halved from 50 to 25 not too long ago

Don't forget that the inventor of Bitcoin basically generated a big pile of money before making it available to the public. Since people who get in earlier generally have an easier time accumulating money than the libertarians who adopt Bitcoin later because they're afraid the state will take their hard-earned money away, the whole system is basically a standard pyramid scheme. Oh, and the main marketplace for bitcoins was originally an exchange place for Magic The Gathering cards. Make of that what you will.

Now this is news to me. I thought they were for somewhat anonymous online transactions.
