this has been a feature of broesel hud for ages

from the readme.html file in it:

HP Cross
- rename or delete HudPlayerHealth.res
- rename or delete HudDamageAccount.res

- rename HudPlayerHealth_CROSS.res to HudPlayerHealth.res
- rename HudDamageAccount_CROSS.res to HudDamageAccount.res
