ScholarHaha, thats cuz Vick is dumb and went over to the new map pug to bring players into newbie mix when there were already enough mentors. I am sure Vick is now aware of his mistake.

Wut.

I brought over like 3 people and they were mentors. Having mentors hopefully gives the game structure. If anyone has complaints about specific people PLEASE MESSAGE ME and I'll talk to them and then kick them if it continues. That's the only way this is going to work.

G1One problem that occurred the last time the newbie mixes were running was that open and IM players decided to play in them instead of pug.na and just destroy some of the newer players. If you're not gonna mentor please don't come in to just get easy kills on people learning the game.

I was playing, but I'm smart enough to not play my main. I've actually wanted to get better at demo so I'm playing that. As for soldier... I'm not sure I can play that. :\

pls halp

To be honest, in the first newbie mixes (the ones of Novemeber last year, when we could barely find 12 to play on a night) used to be like half mentors and half newbies.
And they were a lot more competitive and fun because you knew that several players on the other team could and would punish you for making newbie mistakes or trying out dumb tactics. I always felt like that was a better system than having 10-12 completely new players with 1 mentor per team either speccing or pocketing. You just can't see enough to really mentor the 5 other players.

Granted it would probably be hard for there to enough members in the pugs you guys are running now, but the point is that having a number of higher level players in game or on their main is not a bad thing. Assuming they don't abuse it.

WE NEED COACHES. Anyone willing to help add up Vick.

And also any suggestions about how everything is running send a message over to Vick. We are trying to improve as much as possible.

Here's the system I went with for mentoring and it seemed alright.

50/50.

Play Pocket/Medic (if I got stuck on my main (medic) I'd be sure and *not* to do most of the things I'd do when playing medic so as to equip said new player for when they have to play with somebody who is learning). I'd focus on the Demo, Pocket and/or Medic, as well as the other 3 whenever they needed to have interactions with the medic bubble.

Then the rest of the time I'd play scout - mostly passive in nature. That way I could design plays or instruct the roamer and scout on their roles - while providing general guideline tips to the medic bubble.

Most of the newbies play multiple pugs obviously so "oh no they missed something critical" isn't a big deal.

Then I wrap it up by providing a general synopsis of what just happened followed by asking for questions. I also didn't teach them any "plays" for mid or last pushes, and instead encourage them to come up with their own plays on the fly - and will explain why said thing would be a bad idea if it's something that isn't that great.

The main thing is fostering a culture where people aren't afraid to try playing or ask questions, while giving players with generalized experience and above the ability to give those opening tips that somebody invariably gave most of us in the community.

Greed gave a great little speech to the people that were queued up that ought to be part of any guide to players just starting out. I gave a new medic player my "medic swag" speech and it was generally a great time.

Best way for you to get more coaches is always going to be poking them on steam friends and asking them to coach directly.

Steam needs a mass message option instead of copying and pasting the same thing in like 40 different windows

I made a group for coaches to join:

http://steamcommunity.com/groups/newbiemixcoaches

Join that please. I closed it so we don't get a bunch of inexperienced people "coaching", so invite all the players you know who are qualified please!

Can someone help me with the mumble deal? I downloaded mumble, but I'm not really sure how to get into the right mumble channel for the newbie mix. Someone stated that I should add this address "chi2.tragicservers.com: 64738". That's good and all, but I don't know what to do with it. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

When you launch mumble, go through the set-up, then go to the top left and click on 'Server' > 'Connect' > 'Add New...'. Then, in this order, type the following lines in:

Newbie Mix Mumble
chi2.tragicservers.con
64738
lambda

You should be all set at that point.

Ok, thanks Vick. Seems like it's working now.
