i travel a lot for work and often stay in motels with shitty wifi. im wondering if anyone has experience with mobile hotspot devices (standalone units, not using your phone's mobile hotspot) and if there are any that would be sufficient for gaming.

I use a freedompop mobile hotspot (Free 1GB of data per month) sometimes when my internet goes down. Charter kinda sucks and I have an outage once a month on average. Sometimes just 30 minutes, sometimes a few hours.

Depending on your cell coverage they can be quite usable for gaming. But if you have shit coverage like a low signal 4G or a 3G connection then FPS gaming is going to be very inconsitant. I've had times where I can play for 30 minutes relatively lag free (maybe 20-30ms higher ping) then all the sudden im skipping all over the map.

For the record, games like TF2 use about 100MB of data per hour on average. Which isn't too bad IMO.

So to answer your question in short, any 4G LTE hotspot coupled with good reception will work perfectly fine for gaming, but if you have bad reception then things can get sketchy. Keep in mind however that mobile data generally isn't cheap, but gaming is probably a much cheaper form of entertainment than youtube/netflix as it uses much less data.

i work in the wireless industry and most hotspots are super expensive for not much data with shitty networks and speeds. Verizon is basically the goat for hotspots and your best bet is buying an old verizon account from someone that still has an old unlimited hotspot plan on it, otherwise it is a waste of money.

just use your cell phone. The biggest factor here is the quality of service your provider gives.
