Thoughts on Overwatch?

I think that overwatch is a very fun game to play both casually and competitively. I am very open to trying games when they first are released and love to try playing new things. I was very excited for overwatch coming out of closed beta after spending a lot of time watching seagulls stream, the FishStix Invitational, and the weekly GosuGamers tournament.

I not only saw tons of potential as a competitive game, but as a casual game that could be fun and a creative blend of genres executed elegantly (to a degree) for a smooth, enjoyable, easier to pickup but hard to master kind of game. People who call Overwatch a tf2 clone are wrong, it is an attempt to make something different with an fps at its core, moba aspects, all at a very exciting fast paced experience, where team fights can change everything, individual play can destroy teams, and team work can overpower people even when the odds are stacked so much against them.

When sola messaged me on battle.net about running overwatch pugs I was very excited and wanted to attempt playing the game in a more serious environment, and the group picked up very quickly with a great turnout and a great crowd. Playing pugs I found was absolutely thrilling, with the losses being exciting and the wins being very uplifting, where people really started to shine co-operation was a must and an overall very VERY fun time.

I also started to scrim overwatch a bit later on, nearing the end of the beta playing with Sola, The_savior, Avast, and others have been some of the most exciting, fun times I have had in a very long time and I would love to get into the scene after release.

However, with all this there is still alot that needs to be fixed with overwatch. Mcree can duel Almost every single character in the game (with large damage on headshots, flash bangs lasting eternity, ability to empty the entire clip and then get it back with a reposistion) Widow makers sniper charge rate and damage out put is insane and needs to be reduced. The game overall has a lot of stuff needing to be changed, (punishments for leaving games, an actual stopwatch mode for payload, and a bit more) and I will 100% be picking it up when it comes out.

game is v fun to play as a game to pug, scrim, or pub. solo queue is kinda shitty but that's just video games tbh. Mcree needs tweaking and i think just makin him lose his right click would be enough. flashbang is annoying but getting retard @ by a right click spammin Mcree is p dumb. the high charge rate on Widow is dumb too, getting instakilled from a 1 sec scoped sniper is not a lot of fun.

Pretty fun game, only real complaints I have about it are mei and widowmaker. Both are pretty bullshit. Also for a game so reliant on teamplay it kinda sucks for pubs to be such lawless wastelands, its way better to party up with 3+ people for closer/less infuriating games

It's a lot of fun, but I can't imagine how enough devs thought that built in wall hacks, stuns and a plethora of auto aim mechanics were somehow a good idea and actually went along with it.

I had a great time during the beta. I was expecting this game to bomb but I was really surprised at how much fun I had. The only thing I really hated in the game was Mcree's flashbang/fan combo, even the ultimates didn't bother me. Widowmaker is head and shoulders above the rest in terms of effectiveness.

My biggest issue is with the game's horrendous movement. Aim really matters in the game, which I appreciate a lot, but because everyone moves slowly and predictably, the skill cap for aiming is way way way lower than it is in a game like TF2. I feel that if they could somehow resolve this one area, the game would be amazing. Idk how they'd do that though. It'd take some core reworks to introduce advanced movement to the game. If they ever did that though, it would seriously bolster the FPS side of the game, and even go a long way in balancing a character like Widowmaker.

I gotta say though, going back to TF2 after the beta sorta feels like returning to an abuser. Playing a polished, balanced, optimized, and populated game like Overwatch only further underscored how hilariously neglected TF2 has been as anything other than a hat simulator. It makes me sad :(

I'll definitely be buying Overwatch and I expect to put at least a couple hundred hours into it, but since Blizzard has a history of fucking over their dedicated players in favor of mass appeal, I'm sure it's only a matter of time until they do something that makes me quit like they have 3 of their other games

thought it was a pretty well balanced game with a few outliers
definitely looking forward to playing it both casually and competitively
anyone have to take a break like every 4 hours though? idk why but i always got super tired after 4 hours and needed a short break before i could get back into it.

Widowmaker's rifle charge rate is definitely insane though. At the current rate it might as well not exist. There's a good reason why the sniper rifle in TF2 has such a long charge time.

lbr that's not hard for a new game being marketed as an esport

honestly, i could sit down and play overwatch mindlessly for an entire day
i actually had to force myself to stop playing so i could get back to work
it's addicting even though it's not my ideal game. the ease of access & flow from one match into another probably tunnel-visioned me.

I could talk about the movement or what's op/up but really the most important thing I can say is that I had a ton of fun playing it and I'm interested in trying out some legit competitive play. Will it be fun 1000/2000/5000 hours from now like tf2? I have no idea but I guess time will tell.

I didn't get to play as much as I would have liked (due to finals and commencement) but I did get in a solid amount of hours. I only played pubs/solo-queue but the game got much more fun once I started playing people in the 40s and 50s that didn't freeze when they saw a tank. I played tanks 95% of the time and I felt like I had a ton of impact on the game, partially because they easily set-up teammates and Rein/Zarya have game-changing ults.

I feel like they did find a successful middle-ground between MOBAs and FPSs, most of the mechanics that people complain about fit into the crux of a character and are good in certain situations. McCree's flashbang was super annoying, but that was mostly because I played tanks that generally have to get within his flashbang range (which is like, 5 feet). Close range seems to be his bread and butter, but he seems kind of bad at medium-range. S76's ult was mostly ineffective to me because I played tanks that could block his ult no problem, I could see how annoying it would be to the squishier characters. Ultimates are called Ultimates for a reason, they are meant to be incredibly impactful.

Mei was a pain, but she seems especially good at killing tanks. Most other characters can out DPS her, and some of the tanks had options to fight her or just escape. It seems most people don't adjust to abilities and mechanics in general, the biggest adjustment I saw was McCrees learning to try and throw a flashbang to explode above Reinhart's shield. Overall I think it is an extremely good game and I would like to starting pugging and looking for a team when the game actually comes out.

i had a lot of fun playing it

i don't know if i can actually compete in it at a high level though because you need to learn a handful of heroes to actually be a worthwhile teammate in that game, and the only thing i know how to do is snipe, though think i just need a lot more hours in it though

honestly even though i feel like it's an easier game than tf2, i'd just rather play a game that has a dev that backs its competitive scene over a game that doesn't; until valve decides to be more public about their motives with tf2, i don't really want to invest the amount of time it takes to practice tf2 over just picking up another comp game that does have dev support, as much as i still love the game

this is more towards being worth it because of time zones though, since scrim times starts at like 2-4 pm my time every day

I found it really difficult to do anything useful solo in the game.

Plus it felt like there was some kind of mouse smoothing going on that I couldn't turn off made it really annoying to play.

yaugIt's going to be a bigger esport than tf2

This might be very true and only because it's Blizzard.

A game clearly inferior in terms of raw individual skill and roughly the same team skill, just because Blizzard. I'm not hating on Blizzard, they just have the magic to make everything successful esport.

I will likely purchase the game but I have my doubts about the competitive scene. I think people view "competitive" in different ways. I like to think of competitive as player/team having more skill and being better than the other player/team. With all the different classes and abilities in OW, I can see players not really working on being better, you just switch classes/abilities and "Rock/Paper/Scissor/Lizard/Spock" the problems you face. Then again, I am so old that my thinking my not apply anymore.

That said, I enjoyed playing the game very much but I suspect a lot of that was because OW is new and fresh after so many years of TF. All these abilities and eye candy can make for a very fun casual experience.

Really interested to see someones opinion who is actively in a competitive Overwatch team now i.e Mike, Knoxxx, numlocked, NiCO, TviQ etc feels like their insight into the comp side would be far greater than anyone elses.

Widowmaker's rifle charge rate is definitely insane though. At the current rate it might as well not exist. There's a good reason why the sniper rifle in TF2 has such a long charge time.

Something to keep in mind comparing the two games is that widow is meant to be a combat sniper but the 1~ second charge rate is quite ridiculous considering a full charged shot can one shot most characters not go mention she also has wallhacks that can make prefiring easier, a better alternative would be to make the charge time a bit longer so she can't do this and instead of being able to be a huge DPS character is more so a "sniper"

I think that overwatch will turn out as a fine game, and the issue for most people that already play established shooters is that overwatch has some extremely gimmicky mechanics that reduce the skill floor of the game to the point where objectively bad players can play on par with better players (for example widowmaker ult or mei/reindhardt). While this isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's a major turnoff to most of us that are used to playing shooters that are pretty well balanced such as TF2. I think the game will become balanced eventually, but people will have to be patient with blizzard.

My serious issue with the game is just how stale it feels to play after a couple matches, all of the maps are designed the exact same way and suffer from the same issues, and the entire gamemode of KOTH just feels awful to play. Most maps suffer from not having enough height variety, as opposed to maps that people actually like such as gibraltar, which has a lot of height variety.

One huge thing I do love about blizzard though is how good of a world they built with all of the characters, the lore for all of them is spot on and very entertaining to read.

Quite fun, but got bored of it quickly. The first day I got into it I've played almost a whole day, but then I barely ever touched it. Eventually I came back to TF2, which is just as much fun as OW, but feels more challenging. Taking OW's price tag into account, I doubt I'd ever play it again.
