How do I remove these red crosses in my demo files

I've got these weird red crosses occurring in my demo files and well, I don't want 'em.
My friend thought that this issue might have something to do with these demos not being recording on official valve servers. But I've recorded demos on the same server several times in the past without encountering this problem.

However, I found this 3 year old reddit post that might have a solution to this problem. But sadly its attached screenshot is no longer available and my tf/maps folder doesn't contain the <mapname>_particles.txt files that the OP mentions.

note: I've tried verifying the integrity of tf2's game cache but no luck there either.

So i was wondering if anyone of you guys might know where these <mapname>_particles.txt files are located or if you might know if there's a fix to this problem that is up to date.

any help is appreciated, thanks.

Have you tried different dx9 levels?

When this happened to me with the old benchmark demo I just switched from dx8 to dx9 and it fixed itself

I had this problem while playing. The solution for me was to remove the scattergun file from http://www.teamfortress.tv/25647/no-explosion-smoke-script.

Mind uploading the demo and giving the tick(s), I want to try looking for the solution. You can PM me if you don't want to share publicly.

JoltzI had this problem while playing. The solution for me was to remove the scattergun file from http://www.teamfortress.tv/25647/no-explosion-smoke-script.

first off, sorry for being a nuisance. Anyway, it seems like it is the shotgun that is the cause behind these weird particle systems. do you possibly know how one could remove the shotgun file similarly to how you removed the scattergun file?
thanks again.

Ok I finally figured it out after 2 hours of learning stuff and testing.

You have to remove 1 line in a ctx file which is
"TracerEffect" "bullet_shotgun_tracer01" (last line may differ depending on a weapon)

You have to find out which weapons cause red crosses, then you have to go (download GCFScape) to tf2_misc_dir > scripts > tf_weapon_<name> Extract it

Then you follow these steps to convert ctx into txt, open txt file and remove the line given above.

In your demo, at least the beginning of it, haven't watched the whole demo, Ambassador and Shotguns cause red crosses, so I did what I said above and removed them. http://www.mediafire.com/download/916lze989jma49a/txtfiles.rar

Put those files into \tf\custom\my_custom_stuff\scripts It all worked for me, hope it works for you too, if something happens, feel free to contact me.

I posted the same thread on the official tf2 discussions forum and ⎠_ͣ_ͬ_ͣ_ͭ_ͤ King found an easy solution to this problem:

Probably less likely to work but try putting https://www.dropbox.com/s/th19k418ongjwo0/error.pcf?dl=1 into tf/custom/demofix/particles/ . It's not ideal but what it should do is just make that error particle never be visible, but at the same time if it's replacing something then you shouldn't see anything (better but not ideal).
