Welcome to comp TF2 mgc! Here's a few tips I have (though I'm sure there's much better scouts that can explain)

Think about your position. Though a good dm is important, gamesense and position will help you swing the tides into your favor. Have the high ground. 2v1 an enemy when you see the opportunity. And if there's a fight you can't win. Leave.

Right now scout is one of the strongest classes in the current meta. After the sticky nerf in June 2014, scouts have become the bigger damage dealer, and teams will focus their heals on scouts more. Make sure you get a buff from your med. 185 hp can save your life and can help you win the 1v1.

Another useful tactic is to count how many shots your enemy has shot. Solly shot 4 rockets and is reloading? Get him. It's hard to get a scout with no rockets loaded. See a demo reloading? Get him.

There's a few tips I have. And good luck in competitive. And don't forget to have fun!

missing punctuation in a 4 word reply is completely different to making a thread title all caps

You know what? I somehow managed to completely miss the title of the thread and thought aZn was just referring to the weird capitalisation in the first post.

My post will stand as a monument to my stupidity.

Don't be afraid to hold W.

This is actually an extremely loaded answer, but it's true. It is quite often linked with your confidence in your ability (see: clockwork, sheep, snowblind, elmo, others). While you don't want to think that you can fight the world, you want to go into the mindset that you quite potentially have the ability to win ANY duel you take. If you get into a duel and just go "I'm on 2 hp there's no way I'm gonna win", then you'll probably never clutch a situation similar to that, (EDIT:)especially if it's an important moment in a game.

My recommendation is to just study some demos, mostly of transitional/phase play to see how both scouts on each team react to what their team does and the other team does. Rollouts are cool and all but they are 15% of the game.

Good luck mate!!

A few tips from my friends that helped me with Scout:

-Remember to get buffs from your med, particularly if you have crit heals. That extra health will save your butt very often.
-Don't pick a fight that you can't feasibly win. For me, this is basically all 1v2+ situations and sometimes 1v1's when I know I'm not at the level of the other guy. It may be a little different for you, depending on your skill.
-If you do commit to a fight, BE CONFIDENT. Land your shots as well as you can, pay attention to the amount of damage you've dealt, and if you see the other guy start to run, that means you've pretty much done your job. Make a little extra effort to finish him off if you want the pick, but DON'T get baited into over-extending.

Practicing will be the only way to improve dm as scout.

As for advice:
-Don't tunnel vision the medic everytime you see him
-Call out basic stuff like damage, if you kill someone, where someone may be hiding, etc
-Keep track of the other teams uber e.g. Your med dies, they have uber adv. , their med dies, you now have the uber advantage, both meds die, even uber
-Like everyone else said, get buffed before doing anything
-Play mge to practice 1v1 situations
-Never take 1v1's in game unless you know the other person has worse health than you
-Lowering sens can sometimes help you

Remember- its usually not the best to just rush down the med. If the med is alone go for it, just don't let him get a saw and get out. If he is with a teammate, think about who he is with. if he is with a low health scout or a mid health demo, try to 1v1 the heal target and the get the med. if the fight is going bad, just back up. If he is with his teammates, the medic is not your priority. the med is the roamer's priority more than yours. a scout can easily be shut down. just cover flanks in that situation
