samjain98I don't think you really need much exposure to the specific game modes to be able to cast play-by-play for tf2.

I do think that is right, to an extent. While you certainly don't need as much exposure to the specific game mode as the color caster, it still goes a long way to have a good bit of exposure as a play by play guy.

This is mainly true when it comes to just watching the game. Since I don't play highlander really (other than casually with friends sometimes), I find I have a tougher time following the action and spotting out certain plays being made. My amount of experience, or lack thereof, can be seen when trying to talk about what the teams are doing as well. While I understand the meta of highlander on some level, I would be able to cast the game mode even better if I had played it more. That's why I steer clear of doing much analysis of the games, and leave it to guys like Grizz and Sigafoo.

In the end, I don't think its absolutely crucial for a PXP caster to have played the game mode competitively at a higher level, it can certainly add some value to the cast if they had. Take me casting 6s for example. I think I improved the most casting that game mode when I started playing at a higher level than just UGC Silver, and I think some of the best PXP guys in any game are the ones that played it competitively.

However, do I think I'm qualified to cast highlander? Yes.

What else has gecks done? I agree that he is a fantastic caster, I guess my question is where has he gotten his experience besides tf2?

Along with TF2, I have also been casting a game called CrossFire for about five years or so, and have become an employee of ESL to deal with that game specifically (for casting and administrative work). Regardless of anyone's thoughts on the game itself and its viewership, it has given me the opportunity to cast in the ESL studio in Los Angeles three times now, as well as attend a couple of other LAN events for the game when the WCG was still around. I'd say CrossFire is actually where I have gained most of my 'professional' casting experience, because of getting to work in places such as the ESL studio which is just about as high tech of a studio there is in the eSports industry. I am also a CS:GO caster for CEVO.

Sigafoo was an awesome play-by-play and colour commentator, really sucks that we lost that. It's a good thing that gecks is still on board though, he's been the best tf2 overa caster IMO despite the lack of experience

As long as you pair him with an experienced HL guy then the casts should still be 10/10. Might want to groom a new play-by-play caster to take sigafoo's place though, sig could do both roles really well and now gecks probably can't cast everything

Also, is there much besides grizz to pair up with him that has a lot of experience? Please no turbocop :[

It was a joke in case a new turbocop-like guy shows up. Don't hate the guy or anything, his casting was just very uninspired :V

I can certainly understand why he'd be upset - mainly because when you cast fairly regularly (there have been periods where I've cast every game in a season for a casting org - I remember there was a spell with EXTV that if I didn't do the cast; the cast didn't happen) you end up putting off a lot of things you'd rather to be doing in order to cast, because you feel some sort of attachment to the community, the folks you do the casts with, and so on, an obligation if you will, and then when a big cast comes up, you're suddenly cut out - it feels like those sacrifices that you made meant nothing and were not taken seriously (I luckily have avoided such situations mainly by clearly communicating my positions to the people who organize such casts well in advance lol).

The simple fact of the matter is that this could've been avoided with better communication on both sides, despite whatever fanfare may exist for a particular caster it's *good* to rotate in new people and old people even if they don't want to cast regularly, because it *does* drain you to cast several games per week every week for a long period of time - and also builds the expectation that you will be needed in such ways in the future. I know that to be the case for camera types too ;)

Hopefully he'll carry on casting if folks enjoyed it though - casting is quite a lot of fun if you have the itch and get on well with any co-casters you may have (though I secretly long for a repeat of my solo-cast open finals from years ago lol).

Dude in regards to that game featured above me, I swallowed a marble from it when I was like 7 and I was SO scared it was gonna get stuck in my urethra/dick on it's way out forever and I'd have to get surgery to remove it.

Welcome to being 7 I guess lol.

QuazzyAnyway, I think it's dumb how eLv handled the situation. It's like a worse version of the GGG froyo disaster.

Anyone mind explaining what the GGG froyo disaster is?

Because Gecks is arguably the best caster this game has ever had, and also does professional broadcasting for a living.

Gecks is great and all but no one can ever match leogeo.
