Asia TF2 Roadmap

You there! Do you remember that video? Yes! That video of the Korean Demoman Mad was crazy, wasn’t it? Did you happen to catch the MC6 Grand Finals too? Sure was a good show by the Chinese superteam Cute Beast!

Things are heating up in Asia again, and I’m here to tell you exactly why you should be excited! But as with any good anime, there’s a lot of backstory: about how the protagonist’s entire family died when he was 5 (the younger he is when this happens, the cooler he is) and now he has to avenge his family while trudging through 50 episodes of filler about his love interest who doesn’t quite love him back. But for you my friend, we’re going straight to the plot summary!

The Backstory

Earlier this year, between March and April we had the Mercenaries Cup 6. This is a double elimination tournament that serves as a quick preview of what the Asia Fortress Cup hosted from June to August will hold. So what did we see? Anything but boring! The Chinese (by this I mean those in the mainland and Shanghai) disappeared like the way Sasuke does; a few years back most of their top talent moved on, but they came back during MC6 to surprise everyone with the most ridiculous playstyle EVER. Historically, the intercontinental rivalry has usually been between the Japanese and Koreans, more recently becoming a kinky threeway between the Japanese, Korean and Singaporean top teams. But it gets better. Now it’s a panties dropping fourway between the Japanese, Korean, Singaporean and Chinese!

If you asked anyone who would win MC6, everyone agreed that the Korean team Unagi Park would take it, but we were wrong. The Chinese superteam that is Cute Beast came in and literally stomped everyone. Throughout the entire tournament, they 2-0’d every match except the finals. The Koreans previously proudly sat on their throne as the best country in Asia, and for the first time ever, the Chinese have taken it for themselves. It might sound silly to you, but there were legitimate reports of crying and absolute guilt amongst the Korean community about their loss, so the coming few months of competition will surely be exciting. Our community isn’t big, nor does it offer the best prizes or best routing between countries, but what we have are some of the most passionate people around!

What To Look Out For

To get the gears turning, we’re bringing you a slew of exciting things to look forward to, so what are they?

  • June 20th / 21st: Emi Dizziness vs. Cute Beast & Mix - Showmatch of the top players registered for AFC9 in the Singaporean region. The maps played during that weekend will be Granary_Pro, Logjam, and Sunshine. The Singaporean Region Showmatch will be played at June 20th around 9PM GMT+8, and the showmatch between Emi Dizziness and Cute Beast will take place on June 21st 8PM GMT+8.

  • Last week of June: Fuzz Cup Grand Finals - A local Korean double elimination tournament featuring top talent within the Korean scene pitted against each other.

  • June & beyond: AsiaFortress Cup 9 Division 1 Matches and even possibly Division 2 Matches!

"I’M HYPED, WHERE DO I TUNE IN?"

www.twitch.tv/shounic - Unless we’re going to be broadcasting on TeamFortressTV, in which case you’ll know when it happens anyways!

Final Words

I would really like to see more activity between Asia Fortress and TF.TV since we never hear of them. Maybe if things go well, there will be the possibility of an Asian team at the next I-series?

My biggest problem with asiafortress (trying to watch every bit of comp. tf2 that i can) is that it's hard to navigate. where are the standings or brackets? if you could explain it that would be nice :)

For now we only really have a forum to work with and a challonge account, so our matches are coordinated through forum posts in a particular section by the admin (e.g. me) and the respective team leaders will talk it out there. Our brackets aren't created yet as the season hasn't started, but when it does me / another admin sticky a forum post with the link to the challonge brackets. I'll remember to add them to the Youtube VOD descriptions!

To be completely honest, the only real issue is money. Our community is too tiny to be able to fund anything, but given that can be covered for us, I think it shouldn't be too insanely hard to put some sort of a team together.

How much did it cost the Aus teams to go in USD and would flights from any of those 4 countries be comparable? For future reference of how much we're looking at.

I think flights to europe from asia would be more comparable to flights from the US than flights from AUS.

The cheapest option for both ways is around $1000 per person Seoul to London through Istanbul.

ShounicThey kept pushing in on even ubers and won. If that isn't insane I don't know what is.

I believe that called superior dm.
If u keep winning teamfights on even ubers/non uber pushes and with no discernible player advantage you just have better dm

I can't say you're wrong, but the only notable players on Cute Beast were the pocket and scout, and Unagi Park had a few star Korean players too.

I watched the cast back a little since you brought it up, and there were plenty of times where Unagi Park's flank would destroy Cute Beast's flank, so I still don't really think it's up to DM since there's times where Unagi Park would win DM fights.

The thing is that Cute Beast is winning even uber fights without relying on DM. I remember asking them in mumble why they were so successful with it, and 10 (the CB scout) said that they practiced their coordination and uber kiting tactics a lot.
