I just finished watching that video and I don't really like the new start menu. Opinions?

What are the benefits to Windows 8 anyway? It seems that the build was focused on the interface.

You get the bonus of having to buy a higher end version if you want DirectX 12. Isn't that fun!?!

Does W8 really require a more high end computer? I haven't noticed many changes from W7 besides a number of behind-the-scenes improvements that probably have a minimal impact on hardware performance.

As a user, literally none IMO. It may perform a bit better.

Most of it has to do with Windows wanting to control its software like Apple. Now you can buy music, videos, games and software from your desktop. Kind of like an Xbox.

Also optimizing for touch screen computers is another thing. Seems like they're trying to make an experience out of a computer, trying to revolutionize PC's.

Depending on how easy it would be to switch back to W7, I may try it. I'm pretty damn comfortable with the current interface.

just seems like a "graphical overhaul" that isn't really even that. you can make w7 look like w8. so i don't really understand the point of it. it seems like a downgrade in terms of performance with 90% of video games.

I think every other version they've made pretty bad OS's.

95 > 98 > ME > XP > Vista > Win7 > Win8

Just wait for Windows 9.

Tried it for a few weeks. No. That's all you need to know.

That video was really funny. W8 is way worse than I thought.

I'll be switching to Windows 8 once my college has free copies available. I personally think it's really neat once you figure out how everything works

I disliked the part where they kept searching for 'simple things' like 'printers' while apps was selected and acted surprised when they couldn't find it. It was obviously there you just needed to switch it to files. Instead they act astounded and shit talk a bit more.

I mean I guess I'm sorry you didn't see those two obvious sections with multiple search results.

The review is laden with extreme premeditated bias, but still the first serious peek of Win 8 I've seen so I'll take it either way.

why are there categories in the first place? the w7 startbar search works fine without the seperation

It feels as though they are prioritising minimalism and aesthetics over functionality and efficiency.

It's fairly evident that they have been heavily optimising the interface for touchscreen displays. However, the drastic difference between traditional desktop operating systems and smartphone ones is not a coincidence; different interfaces are better suited for different forms of interaction. Microsoft seems to be designing a middle ground between these two styles, creating an interface that is acceptable for both a touchscreen and a more traditional setup, but great for neither. I should not have to waste my time clicking a bunch of extra icons in order to perform everyday tasks.

I completely agree with you. Sucks that you need to select a certain category to find what you want.

It looks really good for people who have never used a computer before but also have used a smartphone before. Not sure how big that demographic is!
