Hey, hi all. I'm new of the forum, i joined because i want some information about competitive "world" of TF2. I started playing tf2 recently, so some of you may say i must play in community server for fun before starting a competitive way. Yes, but i love the competitive side of the game, i love the cooperation between team and i find the competitive funniest compared to the for fun match.
So i want to try enter a team and start plaing competitive, but there's some problem, i don't know how it works. i've tried to connect my steam account to ETF2L, i'm in the site logged in and i'm trying to insert a new recruitment post, but there's a lot of Skill Level like: Prem, High/Prem, Mid, Mid/High, Open, Open/Mid. and i don't know in which skill level insert my recuitment post.
for the truth i know nothing about the competitive in TF2 (except type of match, of little less readed in some guide on internet) I would be happy if you help me to better understand how TF2 competitive works.
Thanks to all!!!

cool compilation of 6v6 (and competitive) things can be found here
might also want to check out TF2Center for a bridge between competitive and pub play
ETF2L is the EU (European Union) TF2 league, while UGC and ESEA are the free and paid NA (North America) competitive scenes, respectively.

Hey there! Glad to see someone new trying to get into the competitive scene.

The link above that chrono provided will help you get started in terms of what you need to use/get to start playing competitive, aswell as some good guides about how competitive matches works.

About ETF2L, The Skill levels are Prem>High>Mid>Open. Since you don't have any competitive experience, you should start in Open level. Just try to write a bit about yourself in the recruitment post you're making, and try to play some lobbies (aka competitive matches) here: http://tf2center.com/lobbies to see how things work.

Goodluck!

Make sure to have fov_desired 90, autoreload on (cl_autoreload 1), damage numbers (hud_combattext 1) on with batching (hud_combattext_batching 1, hud_combattext_batching_window 2), a hitsound (tf_dingalingaling 1), and viewmodel_fov set to a higher number (optional ~ 60-100) or even better r_drawviewmodel 0 or even better setting different weapons to show up (e.g. mêlée on, primary and secondary off). There's also a new command r_drawtracers_firstperson 0 which gets rid of the bullet sparkles that come out of your hitscan weapons.

Custom HUDs are almost a must-have since they provide not only more centred view of things, but also essential information such as more easily readable damage numbers or medic's patient's health in digits etc.

Also make sure that your game is running above 60 fps (above 120 is what you should be aiming for, but 60 will do). That can be achieved by either a good pc or configs, which you can find in the post #2. Configs get rid of stuff like ragdolls or gibs which are distracting and unnecessary.

hey!,
all links above are really great, do you have any idea of what class you want to play?
You should try and learn strategies and how to play the competitive format that you pick (6v6 or 9v9)
Marxist, a valued member of the community, makes really in depth guised to sixes strategies:

Why is it that it's always the australians coming in giving advice to ignore the haters and put on thick skin.

Actually I know exactly why.

FiZZiLI don't mean to be a downer, but maybe you should have more than http://i.imgur.com/vhwLWrK.png before getting into comp.

The quicker you get into comp, then better, right?

With a game like tf2 hours don't really mean shit. The basic concepts are so easy to grasp (and at least partially translate from other shooters if you play them regularly) that as long as you have half a brain you could probably at least start learning how to play competitive with only a little bit of time into the game itself.

Some more links that might be useful for you:

ETF2L 6v6 Guide
ETF2L Highlander Guide

Those explain how etf2l works and how to get started. TF2Center is great for starting comp as well, however it requires you to have played the game for 100 hours. You can use those to work on your aim in MGE-Servers and practice Jumping on Jump-Servers (if that's relevant for the class you play)

For every question you may have about competitive 6v6, feel free to refer to that list I made, which has already been linked. It includes lots of resources and is definitely worth a read.

Watching casts of competitive games can also make you understand the game more.

And to end this post: Welcome to the competitive side of Team Fortress 2! If you have more questions, you can ask them on these forums or add me and I'll be glad to help

imZodiacPrem, High/Prem, Mid, Mid/High, Open, Open/Mid. and i don't know in which skill level insert my recuitment post.
for the truth i know nothing about the competitive in TF2 (except type of match, of little less readed in some guide on internet) I would be happy if you help me to better understand how TF2 competitive works.
Thanks to all!!!

Prem is highest
High is second highest
Mid is mid
Open is lowest

prem/high is in between prem and high
mid/high is in between mid and high
open/mid is inbetween open and mid

for a new player aim for open

Thanks to All! I read some guides that you have posted and I found it very useful, however , I started looking for a team of my nationality ( for not having language problems ) and after a little research I found it. for now there is nothing challenging but I will start to play TF2 like I always wanted.

i like to play Engie (also Heavy or soldier a little bit) so for the first time i play competitive, i will play highlander!

I wanted to thank all of you for the help you have given me !

as mentioned by others, the game mechanics are simple, it does not take much time to understand them, another problem is rather to learn to play as a team, the main call and other things, but I can only learn by playing in competitive, as in the community server nobody plays "team"
