144hz to non-dvi

So after christmas I ordered the BenQ XL2411Z 144hz monitor, and I plan to use it with my desktop PC in the future. However my PC has a broken video card, I'm going to replace it when I have money but for the foreseeable future I'm using a fairly decent laptop, can get 120+ fps on tf2 which is good enough for me.

However my question is, can I get 144hz on a laptop that doesn't have a DVI port? It has HDMI/VGA. I know VGA can't support 120+hz and only certain versions of HDMI can (haven't checked mine). Could I use a VGA to dual DVI adapter or would that not work?

HDMI supports 120Hz
dunno about 144
i remember using a VGA to Dual Link DVI converter to use my CRT at 100Hz but I don't know if all monitors would be that kind.

oh okay then that's fine for my laptop, when i was reading online i misunderstood and thought hdmi only did 60hz

Edit: apparently only reading the first few posts on a forum is a bad idea. Apparently hdmi doesn't have the bandwidth to do 1080p@120hz.

Most laptops don't have HDMI 1.4b which is required for 120hz+ output.

You're best off sticking with displayport or DVI-D.

You could use the HDMI and play at a lower res i believe.

Honestly you're probably not going to be able to get the refresh rate above 75hz from the laptop.

I'm 100% sure that if your laptop is 60hz it will not run a game at 120hz/144hz for your monitor.

See if your laptop has a mini displayport. After a bit of research I finally got 144 Hz to work on my Asus g46vw via a displayport to mini-DP cable.

well it's looking like i'll just use it 1920x1080 @ 60hz until i can buy a new video card then, thanks for the info

Refresh rate limit, bad scaling, resolution limit, and also, hdmi is an upgrade from old SCART which was used pretty much only for older consoles and video cassette recorders, since it has an audio channel, which we don't use on pcs

Regardless of whether it has the bandwidth or not, you can do 120Hz via HDMI. You just need CRU to create custom timings for your resolution. I had this same issue a while ago so I made some custom timings for 1920x1080 @ 120Hz.

1. open CRU and select your monitor, click "Import..." and select 120Hz_HDMI.bin
2. Restart
3. Go into Nvidia Control Panel and create a custom resolution with these timings and hit test.

You should have 120Hz on HDMI. Works on my Planar SA2311w (it doesn't even support 120Hz HDMI natively) with no frameskipping.
