6v6 only game mode with no team deathmatch confirmed. they are setting this puppy up for competitive straight out of the gate. Will i play it? oh hell ya, it looks fun just like Battlecry does. What i would really like to come of this is the spark that gets valve rolling on tf2 baked in competitive matchmaking.
I know valve already makes tons of cash from tf2, but this game will definitely take some people from other FPS games, tf2 included. I hope they add competitive because if anything is gonna be a nudge to do so, its this game.

i don't think this was linked before. here's a 6v6 shoutcasted match.

the fact that the first gameplay they're showing of the game is a shoutcasted match, really makes me excited for the games competitive future.

Considering it's a pre-recorded cast with really obvious fake enthusiasm and a clusterfuck ending where you can't tell whose team people are on I'm not too impressed.

animations/hitboxes look clunky and gross and there are no interesting dm-based battles to be seen. In fact as far as I can tell there isn't even a tactical movement system and aim requirement is basically zero

Seems like it's only notionally an fps in that it's pretty much a strategy game from a first person view, pretty disappointing.

edit: by tactical movement I mean like dodging and height ad and stuff, obviously there's way more charging and flying in this game than your average fps

Looks like Firefall. but then team-based & competitive

IMO not that great to look forward to, more hoping for a good future for reflex & waiting for star citizen to be released.

Looks like a much slower and less skill based version of the game we already love and play.

Widowmaker as a concept also leaves me uneasy. It's never good to give your sniper an innate movement advantage in addition to being able to activate wallhacks to be able to hit prefires extremely well. Only way I could see her being balanced is if her damage was bad to compensate for all the advantages she was shown to have. And a sniper that can't deal lethal damage isn't much of a sniper at all.

This honestly just looks like a really great RPG/MOBA dev team has decided to make a FPS, sure they are amazing programmers but they don't have the experience of balancing or creating enjoyable FPS's. So it will probably be a major clusterfuck because of the lack of genre awareness the team has.

Tying in MOBA elements into a fps has failed at creating interesting gameplay in the past, but Blizzard is a company that has made all of it's money on improving already existing genres. I seriously hope that they prove me wrong in the release game and that that match was not indicative of Overwatch's potential as a FPS.

What scares me most is the defense\offense distinction they made. In tf2 defense classes are boring to play as, unfun to play against, and generally bad as player skill increases. I wonder if blizzard can make it work.

i can't tell if you've all forgotten this game has heros with skills and cooldowns.

that already makes it 100x harder than tf2 for most of you. I'm actually interested what type of players this hooks.

By harder do you mean "Has a higher skill ceiling" or "Is more convoluted"?

definitely skill ceiling.

i had this conversation last night, it's like if every class had some sort of big cooldown similar to medic uber that they had to properly synchronize and use efficiently.

Enemy team pushing badlands last and you blow your overcharged gorilla self healing turret in yard, and don't have it for last, but the enemy crossbow weilding dude has his ulti up, you lose last.

obviously im making that up but the concept is the same. like dota when you teamfight with/without your big spells on cooldown. definitely high skill ceiling.

The best result to come of this would be Valve seeing it as a threat and improving TF2(or pushing out a sequel) rather than just merely adding cosmetics.

Realistically, Valve will just sit on their hands and continue to make obscene amounts of money from cosmetics they dont even design anymore.

Having cooldowns now makes skillceiling higher? I had 2/3 hotbars full of cooldown abilities back when I played wow ages ago. Is WoW arena or whatever that shit was called the game with the highest skillceiling ever now?

Has the potential to be a lot of fun by the looks of things. The only things I can really hope for:

a) good netcode
b) consistent Australian playerbase
c) No ultimates (plz)

Since this game has the Blizzard branding, it could become pretty popular, despite just having elements from other games (see: Warcraft RTS, WoW), and just Blizzard putting their own spin on it.

I don't mind classes having skills, but everyone with an ultimate is just annoying imo. You can be some gosu aim guy, but if someone dunks you with their ultimate or resurrects their whole team after you get a bunch of them then that's just annoying.

Tying in MOBA elements into a fps has failed at creating interesting gameplay in the past,

Monday night combat would disagree...too bad it was only backed by a small studio so it couldn't gain momentum, but it was a really fun, skilled and interesting game.

People really shouldn't judge the depth of a game by some early gameplay video...what do you think all of the TFC people were saying when they saw the trailer for TF2 and first tried it? It was incredibly slow and took away so many skills from the pedecessor...yet here you guys are. People found new and different ways of playing it over time that slowly expanded on the skill ceiling and what was possible.

SleepingLifeTying in MOBA elements into a fps has failed at creating interesting gameplay in the past,

All games who have tried to make a FPS moba have their core issues with balance. The FPS and MOBA genres individually are difficult to balance, so when you add aiming to a MOBA it becomes twice as hard. You now need to balance every ability and weapon for both the average player and the best players aim.

i don't think any of the indies who tried fpsmoba had the budget to do so.

While the whole skill discussion is quite relevant to us here, I think perhaps the bigger implication is how successful this game will be at drawing away TF2's casual community. Notoriosuly unininterested in things like aim, movement, and balance; the hero and ultimate system will likely have a huge appeal to those players who simply want to role-play DM with their favorite character. It'll also be the new "hotness" at first, and if it is at all successful at alesst fulfilling that desire to run around as your favorite hero and generally be rewarded with killing things, TF2 ought to be worried.

Our game is old and—like it or not—a pub-based phenemomon whose seemingly only relevant factor in the eyes of its developer (I conjecture) is the money it rakes in on digital cosmetics. If the pub community goes, and Valve continues its laissez faire approach to the comp community, Overwatch could be the final spear in TF2's side.

Or it'll be bad.
Or Valve will develop a way to make TF2 clearly superior

i would love to try this game competitively

looks really neat and it's going to have a ton of support from blizzard since it's their baby (i'm watching blizzcon and the COO of blizzard is tearing up talking about how excited they are to have finally revealed it)

hope to see a lot of tf2 players when i try that game out for a spin :3
