SchweppesI just don't get the hate he gets, he makes fun, casual videos while getting more people interested in tf2, and who knows, some of those players will hear of competitive (and STAR has talked about this multiple times anyway) and progress into it themselves. That's not really a bad thing, is it? It's fine if you don't like his jokes but there's really no reason to hate the guy, at least to me.

I don't think most of use dislike STAR_ that much. But some of his fans are not the brightest...

Well that's true, tftv seems to be civil about it but I've met people in game and in other places that absolutely despise him for no good reason

i dont think any comp player "hates" star because of who he is or how he portrays tf2 to his fans

i think some players get annoyed when his legions of drooling pyro mains only take breaks from talking about how amazing star is to discuss why some reskin of some stupidly broken weapon should be allowed

there are also a few players on that roster who were a lot more instrumental in winning open than star was

hes still a nice guy whos not awful at the game comp-wise he just spends a lot of time pubbing and around pub-minded people

anybody who actually goes out of his way to say that he hates star without giving any kind of direct interaction with him or reason why is probably somebody who you dont want in your life or at least around you on the internet

I got into tf2 by watching STAR's videos, and I liked how casual/cheerful they were. I bet you that attracts more people into the game then some standard iron heavy main demo review. Most people would rather have fun then worry about ubers and advantages for an hour. Yes I like competitive but for me this game truly shines when you hop on a random server with some friends and just play casually and have some fun.

I am barely reading half of this but STAR is the greatest human being ever (besides me) who has done tons more for the community than nearly all competitive players (with the exceptions of Lange, enigma, Sal etc.) and the funnier thing is all of his fame has nothing to do with any of us.. I joined budsquad having zero idea of who he was (didn't even know he had a youtube channel) and coming out of it realizing why he was as famous as he was, it's well deserved.

If it sounds like I have his dick in my mouth it's because I do, it tastes delicious and very much like brown sugar.

Anyway about b4nny being as famous I don't think he even wants to be.. he puts minimal effort in his perception and on streaming so I doubt we'll ever see it. ruwin was the only highest level competitive player to really stream and it unfortunately put his character faults for the whole world to see and ridicule, you really need to be a personality and have a wildly thick skin as a competitive player comparative to say an internet personality. It can happen though.. fatal1ty as an example.

What would the world be like? Probably like South Korea and SC... but much smaller

i think star brings a ton of good exposure to competitive tf2

he has always been nice whenever i talked to him while pugging in pug.na and it's not like he doesn't actively play in a competitive setting either

Star's videos actually introduced me to competitive TF2. I was aware it existed, but didn't actually follow it before then, let alone played it myself.

But even if Star did nothing at all to do with competitive TF2, how would that be such a bad thing? Just because I like the competitive side of things doesn't mean I can't thoroughly enjoy random funny stuff on pubs or whatever. If he can entertain people and put smiles on their faces just by making videos of him playing a videogame casually, then surely that's a good thing even without a competitive aspect to it?

Also STAR is making tf2 more popular, even though some people hate him/his fans. But keep in mind that there all tf2 players and at the end of the day the most important thing is to introduce new players to the game. And maybe add some new players to the comp scene.

Competitive players can't be an open book otherwise it would make them less competitive. If you knew exactly their tactics, their plays, their habits, you could use it against them quite easily. Not like this already isn't being done, but if you started to include mumble comms and the timing off his teammates from it etc. it would get even crazier. That's why in sports teams use secret signs to call plays and stuff. They don't want you knowing what they're going to be doing. It's as simple as that. The way STAR is doing it is working for him and isn't ruining it for his teammates when he does play seriously.

Stuff like this seems to be brought up often because its an easy answer to tf2 problems that can be solved by somebody who isn't the person talking. You're asking how the community would be different if that popular figure existed, but the community would have to be different to begin with for that figure to exist. Every tf2 figure who could have filled this role has been relentlessly pushed away and trying to be even a small part of the comp community has always been a struggle. The way tf2 works I wouldn't be surprised if b4nny was less popular if he was a full time streamer.
Thanks for the nice things peoples said, except cyzer. I will not sleep with you.

Erhmagheerd, how could you hate star_? I didn't even know there was competitive TF2 until 3 months ago and I have been watching star for over 2 years now. From what I see, the only reason people on YouTube use to hate on him is the lack of videos. That doesn't matter, because each video he uploads is a quality video (From a funny youtube standpoint). If you want to see a different star_ than today, watch his older videos. I am glad he didn't stay like that and now his videos are extremely entertaining and worth the wait. If you want to see star_ play competitive, watch some old esea demos or just search up 'budsquad' on youtube and watch videos posted by people on that team (tagg, seanbud, etc. (Watch their cards against humanity video tagg uploaded, it doesn't have star_, but it is hilarious)). I think a lot of his viewers didn't know what competitive was until he uploaded some budsquad vids. Yes, he had talked about it in some older videos, but he didn't touch on it for a while. Great youtuber, great tf2er, awesome dude. Dont hate.

STAR makes funny videos and casual and competitive players can have a good laugh about them. And that is because he plays both and knows both sides. I don't think someone else could it do better because Steve clearly knows his business and he does a good job.

r4ptureTo STARs credit he has uploaded some comp stuff, but not nearly enough. He gets views from mostly silly videos, but sprinkling some more comp stuff in would be nice.

I think he would alienate his fanbase if he uploaded too much comp stuff.

Edit: just realized this was bumped a few posts up oops
