COMPETITIVE TF2 IS MINISCULE IN COMPARISON TO THE POPULATION THAT ACTUALLY PLAYS/TRADES IN TF2.
So . . . what's the dilly there?
Clearly people own and play the game.

Is it just a lack of awareness? Probably.

Show Content
probably NOT, since every nerd seems to watch star_ and probably heard it mentioned at some point but that's irrelevant.

So, how do we fix that?

Sezco mentioned a HUD with tf2center built into it, and maybe a cfg file installed with it to help with frame rates (honestly, i know plenty of folks that use FPS configs but have no interest in playing competitive, but who knows) and perhaps a weekly tourney thing.
THE LATTER SEEMED LIKE A GOOD IDEA.

I understand the implications of tournament running, and just how much effort goes into getting them up and running. I also understand that nothing is free, especially the infrastructure that goes into large (even small) tournaments. But, small cash prizes* seem to get people interested in competitive tf2. Perhaps a monthly pay-to-play tournament, open to any players could attract more to comp. You could have 3 open and free tournaments (weekly, probably weekend days) to qualify to play (for free) in the pay-to-play tournament, and see if teams would be interested in competing.

Perhaps a small advertising sponsor (think zowie, but less ungodly, more like esea's BenQ advertisements) to help host servers and maybe add incentive could be contracted. Maybe some benevolent person could chip in to it.
just spitballin here folks.

*hats, keys etc also seem to attract people

It'd probably just open up tf2center in the steam browser.
Like, link to it in some way

I also had an idea to make a hud mod with tf2center support built in. However, tf2center doesn't have any readily-available APIs for polling lobby data/joining lobbies AFAIK, so this would be difficult to do without some TLC from the tf2center devs.

Items definitely help a lot, considering how many people play UGC just for the medals. Tradable prizes might be even higher incentive? The problem is advertising it to the pubbers since the difference with medals is that they're basically free advertising for the league.

If people watch comp tf2 and the stream numbers go up, more people will play comp tf2 and more sponsors and organizations will pay attention to the game.

For the weekly tournament, I had an idea similar to it, and it would probably be an easier start.

A PUG group with a mandatory buy in when you PUG, be it keys or metal, and at the end of a week/month depending how many people played, the winnings get split down the top 3 or something. Instead of a PUG group it would just be a google form they fill out to sign up your team and players, then add someone to trade your buy in to, and over time maybe add a payed option.

Someone from the stream relayed some of what was being discussed to one of the TF2Center devs, I don't really know how much progress was made in that respect.

Also Raysfire mentioned he'd do some testing about the TF2Center implementation into a HUD.

Compare that to the ETF2L medals and how unnoticeable they are.

Some people are just oblivious on competitive tf2 and when they do know about it, the entry barrier is simply too big, because the game is a lot different than what they are used to play or because it requires you to put a lot of effort into finding a team, etc...

When I came into competitive I already knew about competitive, I had watched a few streams here and there and played a few lobbies but never took part in any real competition or season.

I was a regular at a pub in my country and one day the community there decided to create a portuguese tf2 league, and what they did was go around on the most frequented pubs and announce it and say they were also creating and accepting solo signups so that you could be put in a team by the admins with other beginners, I went with it, the league was a fail, it didn't even finish, but it was my first tf2 team and real competitive experience on tf2 and from then on I never stopped playing.

I reckon this is one of the most important things, making sure there are constant opportunities for newbies to join our scene, putting them out there so they know they can do it and try to help them climb this entry barrier, whatever way it is.

a really nice way was the newbie mix. That's how I got into comp and I was a trader as well. The newbie mix allowed me to meet people around my skill level and learn the game at the same time. I was also able to make a team with the people I knew and recognized some others have done the same since. I know it's asking alot but maybe a revival of newbie mixes is necessary?

How do you edit the blogframe´s content in the main menu? The big header images seem to be textures in root\materials\vgui (duh) but I just cannot, for the life of me, find out how the actual text underneath got there and if you can actually change it.

If we can add tabs with irc/TFTV/ect on there, a TF2 HUD would be capable of watching streams and playing competitive.

I didn't do most of the heavy lifting - Master Kuni was the main person behind the execution of the idea.

I don't want to say too much yet because like I said, it's still really buggy and it requires a few hoops to get it to work properly, but I can say it has something to do with MOTDs. At the current time it only works upon loading into a local server which will then pop out a web browser window that you can have present on the main menu (like the options window, server window, and console window); however we're looking at finding way to have it show up on launch.

Worst case is (and what Kuni originally did), we have a button on the main menu called "TF2center" or something like that, and have it load you into a local server long enough to load the MOTD, then close the server, leaving you with the browser in the main menu.

However, good news is that you can have more than one of these frames created upon launch of an MOTD, so in theory you could have one open up tf.tv, one open up tf2center, one open up atf2.org, etc. if that's what you wanted to do.

Another iffy thing is that while this should work properly to join tf2center matches, the built-in mumble integration probably wouldn't work properly since you're not running the website in a native browser but rather into a type of "emulated" browser built into the game.
