KingFrostingMy first opinion will be stop saying "America" like is just the U.S, AMERICA IS THE WHOLE CONTINENT!
No, North America is the continent.
South America is the second part of a super-continent.
America is the abbreviation because the majority of large scale unions have smaller states in a larger national state. Much like the UK is usually called Great Britain.

i live in southern indiana, and if someone from abroad were to visit my area and my area only they would simply see the u. s. of a. as a homophobic, conservative, "jeezuz luvin gun totin" sort of country. a lot of the stereotypes come from areas like mine.

m4risai feel a lot of this is wrong
-shitty economy
-rapidly declining quality of life
-having a bloated military doesnt actually help
-higher education is WAY too expensive for most people in the u.s.
-alternate sexualities not accepted in the u.s. as well overall as in many other south american and european countries
-you're right about the healthcare, it's inferior to many other more developed countries
I'm going to assume you've never been outside the States.
US has the largest economy in the world, that's a fact. And yes it's going through a tough time right now but so is the rest of the world. At least USA never got to the point of this.
Quality of life is still pretty fantastic in the States, this index has it third in the world.
Higher education is expensive no doubt, as the government doesn't subsidize it. But the US has by far the most top universities in the world.
Very few countries around the world are accepting of LGBT and the US is one of them. Furthermore, the US has done an excellent job of reducing racism and religious intolerance. This is something even those idealized European countries struggle with. No matter how bad you think it is in the States, believe it or not it's much worse in most of the rest of the world. IMO, USA and Canada are world leaders in accepting people of all backgrounds, and they should be commended for that.
As an American you understandably only focus on the problems in your country. But around the world the US is the most sought-after country for people to live in. This is because the freedom and opportunity in the States is unparalleled.

Well, you're correct, compared to a very limited amount of countries that are developed. But entirely off-base with the majority of developed countries.

Yeh not sure i'd agree with that either. Certainly not unparalleled.
Also on another note i think it would be better to compare the US and the European Union (not just each country in europe) in terms of the Economy. Mostly similar GDPs, land mass and populations.

-Healthcare system is a joke, we had/have pretty much free/semi-free healthcare and I haven't heard of a single situation where someone in risk of life avoided going to the hospital of fear of becoming in debt. That alone should say alot about how a country values its citizens.
-Drug war it's an even bigger joke, it's the most broken thing to ever exist and if anything it helped expand mexican cartels and put millions of innocents in jail. In Portugal we have one of the most advanced policies in the world regarding drugs and we treat them as a health issue not a judicial issue. Drug use is decriminalized as well.
-The whole spying thing. I wouldn't want to live in a country that doesn't value my privacy.
-Internet and cellphone providers, I get astonished every time I hear about stories of those from the US. Over here contracts to buy cellphones barely exist, people generally buy the cellphone on its own and then pick a carrier. Or pick a carrier associated to a celphone but pay for the whole cellphone at the start, they dont sign a contract of x$ for god knows how many years.
I also get internet 24mb (no data caps) + phone + TV (cable 140+ channels) for 40

DrPloxo Much like the UK is usually called Great Britain.
UK = England + Scotland + Wales + Northern Ireland
GB = England + Scotland + Wales
U.S. isn't the strongest economy in the world, China is dominant. the states have not been in an euro crisis because they are not using the euro as currency, they have been the reason for the most recent world financial crisis. Your unemployment rate is still very high maybe not as low as in Germany or UK or Scandinavia etc but still lower then Italy Spain and Greece.
US citizens are spoiled, the best example I can give for that is when I was in an all-you-can-eat restaurant in the states and people were just going crazy and were putting mountains of food on their plates and threw half of it away. Stuff like this would be frowned upon in public by countries like Germany or France that have been scared by war.
Your Universities are trash, they are not on the same level as EU Universities and financing is a nightmare over there. Master and Bachelor degrees that got made standard all over the world because its the one the US uses, is a fucking joke.
Racism and tolerance are just as bad all over the world, I still think its the worst in the US, especially along the older inhabitants with their naive thinking about gays blacks and atheists.
Your gun laws are pathetic with tonnes of "accidents" happening all the time, and especially in the south everyone has a gun.
Healthcare is a fucking joke for you, I think that got discussed enough in the other threads.
I'm personally sick of the US that they think to control most of the world and play the world police, especially in the Arabian countries that's what grows their hate towards you.
Also the manifestation of Capitalism is horrible, it might have defeated communism but capitalism is the next to die. There is actually no single penny going from one country to another anymore, its more like "Russia still owes me 1.5 billion and the US owes me 2.6 billion" etc, its all fuelled by the egoism of that capitalistic thinking and is generally accepted by their citizens.
edit: this all doesn't mean that everyone is like that in the us, I've travelled through all parts of the US and the same scheme was reappearing, I've met and made great friends in many countries though.

the united states is a really big place, and making generalizations about any way that US citizens act does not actually give the full picture.
the US, like every other country in the world, has some problems that we are trying to fix, and playing the shit-throwing "which country is best!!!" game isn't really helpful or insightful at all

yeah, the point being, nigh universally it's called one or the other.
US citizens are spoiled, the best example I can give for that is when I was in an all-you-can-eat restaurant in the states and people were just going crazy and were putting mountains of food on their plates and threw half of it away. yes, all you can eat buffets are a cesspool. They're also terrible quality food loaded with preservatives. But, you're only pointing out that service-side economies aren't the best standard. Other than that, your point is situational and ultimately baby-food in an actual discussion.
Your Universities are trash, they are not on the same level as EU Universities and financing is a nightmare over there. Master and Bachelor degrees that got made standard all over the world because its the one the US uses, is a fucking joke.
Financing for most universities is alumni driven and partially state-funded. The standard being a joke seems to be either A.) you not having an idea of how standardization works or B.) a secondary standard that is actually used and better optimized.
Racism and tolerance are just as bad all over the world, I still think its the worst in the US, especially along the older inhabitants with their naive thinking about gays blacks and atheists.
again, a corner case on a minority. But alright. Sweden is also incredibly racist. If you're done attacking people to critique a country, you're good to leave now.
Your gun laws are pathetic with tonnes of "accidents" happening all the time, and especially in the south everyone has a gun.
Yes, gun laws are funny here.
Healthcare is a fucking joke for you, I think that got discussed enough in the other threads.
Unoptimized health care is better than none.
I'm personally sick of the US that they think to control most of the world and play the world police, especially in the Arabian countries that's what grows their hate towards you.
We can thank the aftermath of WW2 for that. Both European and American governments made the area incredibly unstable with arbitrary lines drawn. Don't push that on one specific government. Yes, Iran-Contra accelerated the hostilities, but it was ultimately an error made by quite a few governments causing strife in an area.

Yes, global economics are silly, and usually just people borrowing from each other until they're even. Sadly, that's capitalism; not the manifestation of it.

Most people I meet seem relatively complacent except for their uninformed and polarized political opinions. They may recognize the issues which affect them in their daily lives, but they are more apt to just deal with them rather than look for an actual solution at the same time.
Things like quality of life, life expectancy, etc. can be linked to wealth distribution.
In terms of government, we still haven't figured out how to use taxation properly. Nobody is a fan of the IRS, but people are too uninformed to support changing tax laws other than what their legislators vaguely suggest they are working on. We don't function very efficiently as a representative democracy, either. Getting hung up on easy stuff like marriage equality is a prime example. I guess people have forgotten that we're supposed to be at least a bit more libertarian than Iran?
