Heard a lot of stuff about the audio technica ad700/ad900 headphones for their soundstage with gaming and was wondering if this would help with TF2. I'll probably be running off the onboard soundcard (possibly a cheap $20 asus xonar dg in the future). Also heard a bunch about the SR850/Superlux 668 and 681 headphones on Head-Fi, anyone tried those?
What would you recommend for tf2? And would these headphones sound good for music as well, or is it strictly gaming?
I've been listening to a lot of ripped pink floyd albums and such in FLAC (lossless) with my current headphones but they are muddy and lack soundstage.

I've ruled out gaming headsets and gotten a little zalman clip mic but I'm looking at some new HPs

i have a pair of audiotechnica ad900's and they work really well in game. you'll have to get a sep mic but the sound quality is really good. as for music it is really good for string arrangements, but little to no bass.

The AD700s are fantastically awesome. Like everyone says they have a fantastic soundstage which is great for gaming because of the directional nature of sound.
I'd recommend an antlion modmic for the microphone, they sound fantastic and just clip onto the side with a magnet.

Samson SR850
Superlux HD668B
I've got the SR850, it's very nice. Standing around in snakewater middle, I can hear the waterfall from second. It's easier to notice the background audio for anime in all sorts of scenes.
As for comfort, it's got a very large driver but the padding wasn't deep enough for my ears so I inserted some cotton to make more room. It's very comfortable.
I've never tried an Ad 700/900 though.

It depends on the amount of money you want to spend on headphones. The superlux are a great cheap option, but spending more for the ATH will get you better quality (and a more comfortable headphone).

Get that soundcard^
(ASUS Xonar DG)
A lot of that 'soundstage' actually depends on your soundcard.
audio technica m50's are also quite nice.
Tho I have a pair of sennheiser 558's, but they sound wonderous with that xonar dg.

The a700 is a good choice. It's basically the same as the ad700 except it has a closed design so the soundstage will be (slightly)worse but the bass is better. I'd definitely recommend it if you like the ad700

Don't get the HD668B, please. The wings will weaken and you will have the metal wires supporting your head, very uncomfortable. I bought the ad700 but returned it because it was too open for me, I prefer closed headphones.

The AD700s do have bass, but you need a decent amp. Which I guess doesn't apply here.

Please, get the Sennheiser HD-25-1-ii
http://en-de.sennheiser.com/dj-headphones-noise-reduction-hifi-stereo-hd-25-1-ii
I love them so much.
These are built like a tank. You can also replace the wires yourself, pretty damn easy.
I have them since a couple years, and they are good to go for 3-4 years at least.
The best under 199$.
I use them for gaming, music, etc.

I love my Sennheiser HD380 Pro.
They are sturdy, closed headphones & you can fold them together for travelling purposes. The cable is very long, heavy, extendable & can be unplugged, which means that you can replace it easily if it ever breaks.
If you don't plan on travelling that much with your headphones you should also take a look at AKG headphones, they make great monitoring headphones as well.
