along with riot making balance changes every three seconds and making stupid ones at that, added to the fact that you need to grind harder than a whore in a vegas strip club to get anywhere near a competitive level and pay riot tons of money to keep up with the current metagame, this is why i will never play their game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=AiZZR9jiUbs

scummy company trying to kill the competition and make it as if dota never existed in the first place

Having limited champions available to you is actually a benefit, not a drawback.

If you had access to every champion, you would be rubbish at almost all of them. By having to save up points, it means you get more playtime with each champ you own and gradually build up you knowledge of champions one by one as you buy them. There's just too much to take in at once if you have access to all of them.

I'd hate to be playing a ranked game with a dude who's just paid real money for all of the champions.

The business model is good tbh. You _can_ play the game completely for free, but there is a decent advantage in paying a small amount of real money. For example, buying a set of rune pages is almost essential and you will probably want to buy a couple of extra champions at some point. This still doesn't add up to much money, not more than you would pay for a game in the store.

So it means people can either play completely for free, and be a bit behind.
Or you can pay around the same that you would pay for a game in the store.

More importantly, it means that I could try the game first for free and if I didn't like it, I didn't lose anything.

Man, I just play because its easy and damn near everyone I know can at least have fun playing ARAMs.

People are so serious about video games sometimes.

fsXDPersonally don't like LoL just because the graphics look to comical for me

Good Lord, this might just be the best argument I've ever heard in any context EVER, especially since this was posted on a TEAM FORTRESS 2 forum.

I feel like the guy just wanted someone to play league with, not to start a debate between dota 2 and league. I could be wrong though.

brownymasterArxsnipExactly why the game is casual. Forces you to hold its hand. Also why it's P2W, as you have to invest time and money (not just be skilled) to be equal competitively.

I don't think you read or comprehended what he was trying to say

TrathBalance will always be imperfect. Heros are changed to be stronger/weaker every patch. I would imagine its the same for Dota?

There's a balance patch for DotA like (at the quickest) maybe once every 3-4 months. Nowadays, new heroes come every 6 months-ish (in DotA 1 anyways since then they're actually new)

Icefrog actually lets people adapt and find new strategies, but then again the heroes in DotA are actually complex and nuanced enough that the metagame shifts like crazy regardless of balance.

League heroes on the other hand aren't complex (partially because you have to buy them so no one owns them all really, partially because Riot has the most retarded design ethos ever "xd you should know what a champion does instantly instead of have to learn anything") which makes the ban/pick process in LoL just really dumb, the gameplay gets more repetitive faster, and none of the heroes are really THAT interesting in comparison.

It's not even like I'm just a biased fanboy or something, I actually play both quite often, but Riot is a scummy company as far as e-sports go and most of their backend/cash shop is horrendous. The champion design is just icing on the cake.

That's a fair point except most of the LoL community is still rubbish at most of the heroes they already own somehow which is impressive since none of them even come close to the difficulty of most of the DotA heroes. '-'

All forcing people to buy heroes does is (combined with their design idea I talk in #49) make them make their heroes less unique, which dumbs down their ban/pick, and makes the game more repetitive. There is very few skill mechanics in this game not shared by another hero, and a lot of heroes have skillsets that have nothing really crazy unique and game changing to them at all.

Lastly, just because you own every champion doesn't mean you have to play them all, though since DotA is basically Normals unless you have 5 or PUG there's also no harm in someone being rubbish at them.

I mean, this would be like arguing it would be great if Valve locked all the classes away except Heavy until you grinded points to buy the others or spent money on it because xd people will be rubbish and might have to learn aspects of the game and get better xd (how terrible of a thing that is!).

you start off with all champs unlocked, no grinding involved.
Yeah I inferred that, but obviously Valve makes money from dota. So what can money buy you in-game?
Hats, of course.

Actually, just cosmetics and keys to chance cosmetics. But there's no P2W like LoL.

not true. you can buy EXP boosters in dota 2 store. Not bashing it as its miles ahead of LoL in my opinion. but ya, there are some cheap micro transactions in dota.

I played LoL a few times after playing DOTA, and honestly it's not that bad. Yeah, you might not have all the heroes, and it is sort of bad, but the heroes they give you aren't absolute shit, they're decent. And it's not like the game is boring it was sorta fun.

ArxHaving limited champions available to you is actually a benefit, not a drawback.

well thats a stretch. if people want to learn how to learn heroes in an inefficient way, or be bad at the game, why wouldn't you just let them? you have an elo system so people of same skill will be wandering around with other people of the same level anyways. you have no proof that some gradual buildup in hero availability is actually better for learning regardless. the reality is the only reason it's done is because they wanted to have as many addictive elements in the game as possible and get people to buy as much shit as possible.
