Newbie Mixes Team Drive for RGL S4 underway

As we have done in many seasons past, Newbie Mixes is running another team drive for RGL’s upcoming 4th Season of Traditional 6s. For the drive, we take 6 players - many new to competitive - and assign them to teams based on their experience and preferred classes. With the addition of a little magic in the form of an experienced coach to help guide them along in their season, these new players then venture forth into the competitive wilds.

In our S3 drive, that coach magic has had some real results. We had 4 teams and over 60 individual players sign-up for the team drive, which resulted in 14 teams (most of them with little prior experience, and placed in RGL’s Newcomer division). Of those 14 teams, 10 made playoffs in their respective divisions (both Newcomer and Amateur), 13 finished the season in its entirety, and many of the teams are sticking together and moving on to their next RGL adventure.

Now, we are once again looking for help with our team drive! If you’d like to help, you can do so in a few ways.

  • Sign up as a coach for the team drive! Coaching is a 9-10 week commitment, where you will be there for your newbie team and help them with everything from selecting a team leader and scheduling scrims to figuring out the maps and doing demo reviews. You can expect to do one map review and one demo review a week, as well as just be there for your newbies to answer their questions.

  • Coach Friday Night mixes! If you can’t commit to 9-10 weeks of coaching, we always welcome coach volunteers on Friday nights. Participation is drop-in between 9 EST to midnight, and you need a record of at least 8-8 in ESEA Open or playoffs experience in RGL IM.

  • Sponsor a newbie team with a server! You would need to provide them with the rcon and possibly the ftp access to do their own set-up.

  • Spread the word about the drive, to anyone who may be interested as a coach, or as a player!

If any of this sounds interesting to you, sign-ups and links are below. The timeline is a lot more trim and slim this time around, with the sign-ups ending on August 28st, to allow for extra time for the teams to prepare for their upcoming season.

Tino & I co-coached a team this past season. It was really nice to see them progress as the season went on, and it really showed me just how much we can develope the low/middle end of the scene skill-wise by just watching a few scrims and telling people how stuff works.

If you want more competition, a healthier community, and to just get to explain the game to some new folks, PLEASE help out by coaching either a newbie team or just hopping in & coaching the occasional newbie mix :)

wasn't there like an rgl fee discount or something if you coached in these last season, is that happening again?

We're still waiting to hear back from RGL in regards to fee refunds, but could not wait any longer in terms of launching the drive. At the moment we are operating under the assumption that there will not be refunds for S4, and that the only reason coaches volunteer to take on a team is to watch their new players grow and join our scene. The refunds may still happen, but I don't want to advertise something without knowing for sure that it's something I can promise.

Hey guys, it's looking like we're going to have at least a dozen newbie teams, and unfortunately, that is not how many coaches we currently have.... If you are at all interested, please sign up! If you want to co-coach with a friend, you can sign up together and indicate that you're signing up together. You will have two weeks to get your teams organized; some of the teams are already organized, so it would be a real breeze to get them going.

Huge thank you to all the coaches who signed up, as well as the admins who tirelessly worked away on putting this together! We now have 13 teams on their way to their first real RGL season.
