Since playing TF2 on my new computer I've gotten a bug that occurs whenever I load up my game. It shows my desktop, then the main menu, and does this around 4 or 5 times before finishing loading and allowing me to play. It shows me my desktop in the res that I use in-game (4:3 stretched).

OBS couldn't capture it, so used my phone: video

i used to have this issue except if i started a fullscreen game at any other point before restarting my computer it'd show whatever my desktop was the first time. think turning off windows 10 game mode fixed it for some people but mine fixed itself on win7 after a while

Its not a problem with your pc its caused by the hud, basically a common way for huds to fix the annoying dashboard dimmer is to toggle the mat_antilias on game lauch so that the edits applied to the dimmer can be actually loaded (it just wouldn't be impossible otherwise) so what you are seeing is the game opening the console > putting in the command to change the antialias so that the menu can be reloaded > reverting the changes to the antialias and closing the console, this is why it blinks 2 times.
It can be disabled however, deleting the cfg folder from your hud should be enough if i recall correctly.

I had game mode off already, and deleting the cfg folder helped a bit, but I still see my desktop once right before the main menu opens. Seems to load much much faster, but I still wonder if it's being slowed down.

If its changing only once could just be tf2 setting again your resolution after every game launch, i dont know whats the criteria on why/when it does it but for me is really common after i change the antialias, changing the resolution through the game options seems to fix it for me most of the times tho like switch to 16:9 and then go back to your 4:3 res and see if it still happens at the next launch.

What are your launch options? And what config do you use?

Remove -dxlevel 95 and res from launch options, the game will remember them after one launch. Both of those will fuck with your launch times.

Getting rid of dxlevel fixed it! But earlier I removed res and manually set it ingame, reset, and it didn't stick. Thankfully for my sanity it did this time.

Yeah keeping -dxlevel will reset the resolution, and change all sorts of other graphics settings.
