Competitive TF2 Guide to Everything

Hey, so after reading the "Future of Competitive TF2" thread, I took it upon myself to create a Competitive TF2 guide for people interested in joining the community + becoming a competitive player, and for the people who are already in the comp. scene but are new and want to learn.

I don't have much right now, but I will continuously work on it until I feel it's absolutely complete.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1JlwTva7IjbJoAOQ5cMAG9NvqBzMA_7LIUpTEHYkojSg

You can view + comment on the document with the link above. I absolutely will take any advice on what I could put in it or change. I plan on doing things such as what websites are essential to the community, how to find what class you should play, how to play maps, how to connect to IRC, etc. It's gonna be big.

I would also like help from anyone who knows how to make pictures (drawing or whatever) that I can use for different sections of the document.

Thanks!

Uh i can't edit it. Is it just me?

edit: Oh i thought we were allowed to edit for some reason. (makes more sense we can only comment since theres always the possibility of a troll who just deletes the entire thing)

It's like that on purpose. I'll be the one doing all of the writing :)

Just post any suggestions here on what should go in, be taken out, changed, etc. and I'll get right on it when I can.

Don't know, taking too long. For now we have this, and maybe it will be the permanent guide. Who knows?

Do you want the entire .odt I made back in 2011 when Gotfrag and places like CommunityFortress and MyGamingEdge were still things? As long as you credit War for at least half of the information, it's yours. It'll save you a lot of hassle and you can edit what you need to in order to bring it up to speed.

I'll think about it. It might be a good idea. I'll let you know if I decide to.

This sounds like a great idea and looks really good so far. Perhaps we should collaborate and I can incorporate this into the newbie mixes. I am glad to inspire you to help and give back to the community.

Can you pass that to me as well? I have a "spectator's guide" draft finished, and am gonna start a "playing 6s" guide soon.

Ok so it seems like we have multiple people writing the same thing without any help from each other. Why don't you just suck it up and get together with these other people to write an updated guide. That way you get lots of opinions and can write one great guide that encompasses everything and is extremely helpful as opposed to multiple good guides. Take all the help you can get, take stalin's ODT, look at other guides and borrow some of the content, if you want to write this all yourself it will be near impossible.

My plan was to make this a large guide that goes over a lot of things. It's not gonna just be a 3 page document or anything.

I kind of agree with LazyPanda on this. Just one person working on it isn't much. I don't know how the google stuff works and accounts, but maybe we could make a "group" google account that certain reliable people have access to can edit and add certain important parts altogether.

Avoid "to be" verbs as much as possible. They waste space and dull down the text. Here's and edited first paragraph:

Interested in becoming a competitive Team Fortress 2 player and joining the community? Already part of the competitive TF2 community, but new to seeking help? This guide covers how to get started with competitive TF2, as well as a lot more, such as learning classes, maps, and more.

I understand that you are going to write a long guide that covers a lot of stuff, but when someone offers you a document that has a whole lot of the old guides from past sources, you don't say "I'll think about it". Hes offering to cut down on your workload so you can put your time into improving and writing new content not rewriting whats already there.

Also, add mana, put him on the document too. He sounds like he has a whole section already written and is working on more.

It's impossible to educate everybody using words alone. I'm a pretty visual person myself, and I think short video demonstrations would be a wonderful addition to what would otherwise be a brick wall of text.

My knowledge of competitive TF2 does not encompass everything so I couldn't imagine how much the information you collect could be condensed, but I do advise you condense it as much as possible. If you can substitute multiple words for one, do it. If you can omit a word for lack of contribution to the idea, do it. The more concise the learning material is (while still getting across key points), the more effective it will be.

Not only that, I'm in charge of the literal Guide tab up there, so if you want this up here, you'll have to go through me at some point. Not to be harsh, but I want to make sure no one's work is getting duplicated, the whole guide is focused together and cohesive. Also, the writing styles need to all be a "guide" style, and unified. Either reach out to me, or lamefx.

As someone suggested making things more visual, I would gladly record one of my Gold/Platinum Highlander demos as Sniper, and put it on youtube if you would like that. I might do VERY limited commentary.

If it's not a hassle, it's a good idea to have some videos recorded in anticipation of what you think would make for a good guide.

I would, but I've reformatted fairly recently so I have about 5 demos total (2 of which were Silver level, and 1 I was playing heavy.), and I would rather use real examples of things snipers do in a real competitive setting rather than planned out examples.

Though I should be in a few scrims during this next week that I should be able to use.

Include usefull links:
teamfortress.tv
youtube.com/(teamfortresstv/fatmop/misterslin/vanillatvorg etc.)
ETF2L.org
esea.net

If i were to look back at when I first started I would have loved to not have to figure out how to make cfg's myself. So maybe include some cfg's for specific classes:
For example if the player want's to start with medic:

bind "mouse2" "+attack2; uber"
alias uber "say_team ****UBER/KRITZ Used****"

and

bind "x" "voicemenu 1 7; say_team ****Uber faked****"

Or for all classes.

bind "x" "incrementvar r_drawviewmodel 0 1 1"

Also briefly explain how these binds/cfg's work and what they do.

Looks really good so far and I really like some of the recommendations.
