Making # of Frags Not Viewable to the Poster

Maybe it's just me but I'm pretty sure we all know everyone makes posts just to see how many +/- Frags they get.

I suggest that people who aren't logged in can't see # of frags a post has as well as not allowing a person to see how many +/- frags their own posts have. Of course they'd still be able to see other people's frags and contribute to their frag counts.

I guess the only thing preventing this from working is the use of alt accounts but if they're seeking that much attention then it can't be helped

I think it's better if people don't plus frag posts insulting other players. Along with automatically down fragging posts that are posted by players they do not particularly like. There are a fair amount of people who bring out the pitchforks way too quick against anyone who makes a mistake, then proceed to hold that mistake against them for a very long time.

For example: You know how everyone loves Powah? He's a great player and from my experience and equally nice person. Well when he first entered this community he was ostracized because he was supposedly a hacker. There was no solid proof of this, but everyone brought out the pitchforks and pretty much railed the shit out of him until he eventually just proved himself as a great person and player. This also happened with kukkye, a top-level EU scout.

It's obvious that this type of poor attitude is contagious, but the irony of perpetually responding to shitposts with insults is that you are actually shitposting and derailing threads even further. It's so much easier to straight up ignore awful posts as well than start a public argument with someone you already think is an idiot. Sorry about the random PSA but I feel pretty strongly about this type of "bullying".

No, it's not just him.

On the topic, a lot of people allow plus/minus frags on a post to dictate whether they agree with its contents or not. Reddit calls it hivemind.

Whatever you want to name it, I'd much rather have people present their own opinions rather than repeat those of others.

My proposal? Get rid of it altogether. It serves no useful purpose. (please note the word useful, because I know if I later point it out to rebut counterarguments I'll look even more of a douche than I am now)

Honestly I fucking adore +frags for no good reason and they're a tremendous contributing part of why I post, but I'm not gonna lie it really encourages shitposting and bandwagoning (hell just look at me).

Could always just make an option in the user CP to view/not view +/- frags; I don't personally feel like that this is a function that needs to be dealt with in absolutes. Some people like them, other people don't. Some people post solely for the sake of getting ~INTERNET~POINTS~ and others use them as a gauge of what other people think of posts. They sort of do serve a purpose in a sense, but I do feel like that removing frags would lead to less amusing posts which wouldn't be great considering that frags are also a more concise way of expressing your opinion without an extra "THIS IS DABES POST" or "this post is shit".

I've just had another thought. Why not let only the poster to see whether they were plus or minus fragged? That way people satisfy their weird need for internet points, and other people don't start conforming.

It would also solve the "lead to less amusing posts" problem, since if plus frags is their motivation, they'd get it.

Well I would suggest just getting rid of them entirely but we all know that:
a) won't happen
b) people like frags so why get rid of them

I second this. We're a good community, but some of the topics here can get a nasty hatejerk going, and the frag system just makes it easier. This way people can see what they want.

Or we can just leave this the way it is, because really? Why is this such a big deal? They're not even like Reddit karma where they accumulate. Honestly tell me, who actually cares that much about +frags lol?

I vote for a combination of these two; I think we should make it so that that meehyun's idea is an option, making the viewer see no frags is an option, and keeping it the same is an option (and the default option.) This would make everyone happy, I hope.

Honestly I see no reason not to try something different with frags as long as it can always be changed back, enough people hate their existence and the bandwagoning they feel it promotes (not saying I agree; I don't know what to think on this haha) to warrant at least trying something new, at least in my opinion.

Make font size increase/decrease based off frag count. Best solution IMO.

Honestly if you can't learn to ignore the +/- frag circlejerking you should just code a greasemonkey plugin to get rid of them. I don't expect them to ever go away.

The frag system is a bit of a counter-retardation system. If someone makes a stupid post and they get -fragged to shit, they probably won't make that post or posts of a similar nature again.

Nobody should give that much of a shit about +/- frags, just post what you feel like and a small red or grey number shouldn't ever influence your opinion.

I don't even understand the complaining about it now, on gotfrag people would -frag threads with 20+ alts and it was just another day on gotfrag.

EDIT: And if you're part of one of the drooling legions of reddit that actually formulate your opinion based on what others are +fragging then you have significantly larger issues than your frag count, such as remembering to breath.

lol, giving our own opinions is what gets us down fragged...removing down frags wouldn't do anything except make those down fraggers post that they disagree with what a person says. The useful purpose of the -/+ frag system is getting rid of needless posts disagreeing with another person's point of view. Imagine if we had to post a comment on facebook for every status we liked :P

If no one gives a shit about +/- frags then why not remove it? If it's so meaningless that it is useless to everyone, why not get rid of the system altogether?

My biggest complaint about it is a + or - frag is it's not very telling at all. Someone could + frag a post because they agree with them on a majority of the points they make. They could + frag because they agreed with one point. They do it because they are friends with the guy. They could + frag because he's their favorite player.

Same goes for - frags, but it's even worse. You can minus frag because you had one bad experience with a player because he had a bad night. Maybe you - frag because you don't agree with his point of view, or because he's a "bad" player. It leads to a lot of confusion. A new player that gets - frags won't know why until someone actually bothers to post a reason. If you aren't willing to post something constructive, then it shouldn't be counted in any way.

If anything, +/- frags hurt the community more because you end up making assumptions about people or teams that may not even be complete truth. Add a polling system so you can get feedback on ideas, rather than up/down voting systems that are extremely vague and uninformative. Leave opinion topics to be based on the constructive feedback posted in a language that isn't ambiguous.
