Demo Buddy (A tool for launching demos/recording)

Amazing, really looking forward to the PREC options. Might I suggest that we be able to edit the demobuddy.cfg for our own purposes? I have binds that allow me to increase/decrease playback speed that I'd like to add. I noticed it's created/deleted upon opening/closing the program.

Can you add a "favorites" bar? It would be awesome to be able to add a demo to "favorites" with tick marks.

That way you can open your favorites menu, and load the demo straight to the tick.

I only force the program to delete the cfg so people don't launch TF2 next time they play TF2 and be whisked away into a demo, and then complain to me that the program broke their TF2 or something. Perhaps I can add an option to not delete the file for users who want to keep the CFG? For now, you could make a new cfg with the settings you want and just exec it once you're inside the demo

SnazCan you add a "favorites" bar? It would be awesome to be able to add a demo to "favorites" with tick marks.

I still haven't found a way to make the demo start at a certain tick, which is why I have to do it through a bind first. I've been trying different methods to load at a certain tick, but no luck. If anyone has any suggestions of a string of console commands or a script that could do this, let me know by all means. Favorites are a good idea, so if I can find a way to load a demo at a tick, I'll put favorites in.

redbanFavorites are a good idea, so if I can find a way to load a demo at a tick, I'll put favorites in.

Even if it doesn't load to a tick, having a favorites list would be huge. Nothings worse than scrolling through 150 demo files all with ambiguous names, trying to find the right one. Even worse when you're trying to make a frag video, using a million different demos.

Ok, I understand that. Maybe you could make a separate CFG we can edit that doesn't get deleted, something like demobuddycustom.cfg, and add "exec demobuddycustom" to your auto-generated config? Only reason I ask this is because with similar programs and the general unreliability with the demo system, you can end up crashing a lot when watching demos and forgetting to re-execute your configs can get annoying.

That's a pretty good idea! So the program doesn't do anything to the custom CFG, it's all up to the user, and it just launches alongside demobuddy?

True, I'll see what I can do, but I'd still love to find a way to make the demo load at a certain tick.

By the way, has anyone found the easter egg (on their own) yet?

Pretty much. Nothing for you to add except that exec command and maybe a note in the readme and I think a lot of people would be happy about it.

Demo Buddy now checks if you have selected the correct CFG folder.
Demo Buddy now checks if your autoexec now contains 'exec demobuddy.cfg' (It still doesn't modify any of your files.)
You can now hover over a setting for more information about it.
Added tabs to prepare for upcoming features.
Added an option to execute demobuddycustom.cfg (Hover over this option inside the program to learn more)
Made the program window a tad bit larger to fit upcoming features.
Added changelog as one of the side buttons.

I'm not sure if this is just on my end, but...
Usually I run tf2 with one of Chris' max/high frames configs. When I run demobuddy with either the High or Max Quality configs, the demo is just completely fucked (i.e. weapon models glitched, random player models in civilian mode across the map, hud glitches, basically game shitting itself.)

That is pretty strange, only thing I can think of is that your 'exec demobuddy.cfg' line is in the wrong place, it has to be the last line in your autoexec. If max quality execs after max frames, it should overwrite the max frames settings and replace it with max quality settings. That works for me at least. Or is your maxframes config inside demobuddycustom.cfg?

Is it either of those things?

Eh... I don't think it's either of those. My autoexec has the correct command as it's last line, and my demobuddycustom.cfg is completely empty. I forgot to mention that demobuddy runs fine with both of the frame optimization configs, just not the quality ones.

How about your launch options? Dx9 is used for the quality CFGs, dx8 for the fps CFGs.

Hm I'm pretty sure I run dx9. I do use the -nod3d9ex launch option (not even sure if it's related, I'm less familiar with launch options.)

I don't think the two are related. You can check which DX version you're running by booting the game and looking at your advanced video options. It should say, albeit greyed out and un-editable, your GPU dx level and the dx level you're launching with your game.

If you're running DX8 with a DX9 config, that might cause some graphical issues, but I'm not sure if it accounts for civilian models lol.

Just tried out the recording system I put in (that will be released to the public soon), can safely say it was the quickest and easiest way of making an in-game movie of the methods I've used in the past.

Wow that's awesome, does the "stop recording" pause the recording, or does it finish one video, and create a new one when you start recording again?

Perhaps a "pause" recording button could be implemented? Making the amount of frag videos posted skyrocket...

It's not possible as far as I know, and TF2 doesn't record to AVI or MP4 anymore, only TGAs. So pausing would be more or less useless. You'd have to start a new recording for each clip you want.

VirtualDub is perfect for this:
http://virtualdub.sourceforge.net/

And here is a no-nonsense guide of how to use it with your tga files:

Also, to everyone who is dropping positive comments and feedback in this thread, thanks so much. It gives me a good reason to keep developing this program, thanks for the support!

I added "exec demobuddy.cfg" at the end of my autoexec, and still, the game launches my configs (crosshair, maxframes cfg, hud, and everything).

Well demobuddy doesn't stop your own configs from launching, it just launches its own config. If you change something in the program like a graphics config, it should overwrite your current one while the program is running, but it doesn't disable your other settings like crosshair or HUD.

Okasis there a way to launch demos in 1280 x 720 from demobuddy like lawena recording tool does by default?

Not in the current version, but I plan on adding support for that soon
