Here's my situation, I run on a great AMD gaming laptop and it runs games very well in general, fallout 4 gets 60+ (unless I'm in large gunfights then it's more like 30-40, which I don't mind) and in tf2 when I'm in spawn i get 150+ frames. And as I run around I get 60-110 but if there's a large fight going on or a choke point, which happens a lot in tf2, my frames go down to 30 and under. Now i really don't mind 30, but as soon as it get into the 20s I start to notice. It's been like this the entire time I've has this laptop but I'm finally sick of it. I play on medium to high graphics. I've tried lowering them but it didn't make a difference. Are there any suggestions?

Comanglia FPS config, that's for sure. Boosts my constant 30-50fps on regular settings to 80-150 with the config on. Lowering resolution gave me a great boost as well (I used to do 1366x768, now changed to 1024x768 stretched). And make sure to run it on -dxlevel 81 for greatest performance or -dxlevel 95 for slightly worse performance, but much better graphics and ability to play matchmaking.

And use Game Booster 3, it really does a ton, especially for laptops. Helps with preventing overheating and throttling. Any stuff like CCleaner is also good, lets you disable some useless programs which always run when you boot your computer.

Considering good gaming laptops tend to overheat, make sure yours does not. Download Aida64, play game and run System Stability Test to check temperatures of your CPU (<85 Celsius should be fine) and whether CPU throttling appears. Throttling means your CPU is forced to lower its power in order to reduce overheating, hence fps drops happen. If your CPU reaches temperatures like 95, buy a cooling pad. Coolermaster ones are pretty dope. If you haven't cleaned the inside of you laptop for more than 1.5-2years, please do it - I can't stress how much it helps with overheating.

[edit] Oh, and last 1 thing. If you happen to have nVidia graphics card, open nVidia control panel and set some custom settings for TF2, like, turn off ambient occlusion, FXAA, Vsync etc.

Have you tried any of the popular low graphics configs? As suggested by others, Comanglia's config is p much the way to go to get good frames.

try the things in that thread.

read through it and decide whats right for you. IF you've tried all of that and your fps isn't any better than you may need a stronger PC. (although i'd also make sure your laptop isn't dirty/overheating, as well as make sure your power settings in windows are set to performance and not power saving.)

If you want to add me I played like 2k hours on a 1.7ghz notebook and I can give you some laptop optimization tips.
Most important:
-If its an iGPU (integrated gfx) resolution with dramatically affect FPS. Lower resolutions and a smaller aspect ratio might help even if it has a gfx card.
-I found messing with mat_specular, mat_trilinear, mat_filterlightmaps, and mat_filtertextures often work bizarrely on laptops and may have to be used in exclusion of one another
-If you have a gfx card you could try using the LOD bias registry tweak. Attempt at your own risk. Idk how this works on laptops and couldn't tell you if it's stable or where the UMD folder is:
