Just because you have a low chance of winning LAN doesn't mean you shouldn't show up. TF2 is a game, made for fun. It's like all some people care about is winning, I'd have so much fun going to LAN even finishing 4th. It'd be fun to meet my team in person, along with many others.

TF2 is made for fun, so if you're not having fun, why play? Also, it IS only a game, which is why real life comes first.

More than a game, it's an esport. That's why we're all here. I don't like the attitude that compares esports to normal games. If I buy tickets to a soccer game I expect both teams to show, up to standard and ready to play. If I donate to an esports team I expect the same. When you become invested in an esport it's no longer separate from your 'real life.' You've made an obligation and should fulfill it.

I'm not directly commenting on the Chess Club's situation, as I don't know the circumstances or the players, but if this type of attitude exists at Invite level then I have a problem with it.

I REALLY didn't want to, but I GUESS I'll address everything said in here. Although I really don't think Tagg should be discussing his quarrels before LAN...

1. When did we stop caring?
We never did. Not sure if this was a bait, or if you meant to say 'scrimming.' In that case, that stopped around... week 2 of ESEA. I'd say we've scrimmed with our 6, 3-4 times since Week 2 for various reasons, which I admit is INSANELY low.

2. Don't know who vile is, but I assume he needed +frags to validate his life. jk, but yes, I plan on attending.

3. Rick hit it on the nail I guess. We've all been busy (outside of tagg). We didn't all just say "let's enter invite and not put in any time" it sort of just ended up that way. Add on the roster issues and lack of leadership/change of leadership and you have 'The Chess Club.'

4. To thorn and the other not so smart people; none of us feel as if we stand no chance and that self defeating attitude prevents people from ever improving or getting to invite. Also, where did you get this ‘them being locked in 4th is why they stopped trying’? That’s far from the truth, and if that was a guess, don’t word it in a way that makes it appear as fact.

Due to our roster/scheduling issues, we essentially played 2 games vs. the other LAN teams this entire season. We had 3 FFL’s due to roster/scheduling issues, an Ashville game in which 3 of us had never even touched the map before, a loss to mixup that half our team didn’t take serious since mixup off classed and a gpit game that tri played demo in. We had 2 legitimate losses: A gullywash game where we were outplayed but was still competitive and a viaduct game that I did horrible, but we still lost 2 rounds we should have won due to 2 separate mistakes.

5. I REALLY don’t think there is any positive to criticizing your team publicly the week of LAN… but since someone on our team has already decided to do such…
There could be plenty of finger pointing about the issues with our team, and no player is exempt... not even sure why this is even being talked about publicly.

6. In regards to practice, we DEFINITELY should have played more. Even though I've only played around 12 hours of TF2 in the past 2 months I've always been available (outside of the past week), we just have not had scrims.

7. In terms of my lack of play. I literally made invite by exclusively watching demos of destro (way back in the day) and playing ammomod. I didn’t scrim as a demo at all, didn’t pug or anything. Everybody learns differently. I already know that the best way for me to prepare is to analyze my demos and just warmup for LAN, it’s different for everyone.

TLDR: We’ve had issues this season, which we can admit. Our team will be prepared and will try to keep things entertaining. In no way will we just accept 4th or even be content with 4th place.

When our parents generation was growing up university was the ticket to success (money). They now pass on their flawed view that university=success. In our attempts to please our parents and become valuable members of society we all spend time jumping through arbitrary hoops to attain a piece of paper.

That piece of paper is granted to you by the same school who admits you, teaches you, and charges you. Meanwhile they take out tuition to build bigger classrooms to admit more students with less teachers. Oh your school has a great student to faculty ratio? Great, now if the majority of that faculty weren't administrators pushing papers to one another I'd be all for it. Instead we get the same recycled and outdated material that's either irrelevant in todays workplace or entirely outdated to begin with. Oh but don't worry, we have online material and TA's. The online material is the same shit they hand out in class only now it's easy to access shit. TA's each have their own idea for how to grade an assignment and I've enjoyed getting into arguments repeatedly.

Don't worry though, when you graduate you'll have plenty of student loans to worry about and a job that doesn't cover the cost of living.

I hate our education system... I've always said that I can learn more in an hour clicking around wikipedia and looking at their references. It's not all bad, there are some hidden gems and if you're the studious type then more power to you. Doesn't mean it's not all ass backwards.

I think it's fair to understand that RL things come up. It's a shame they haven't practiced more, especially since LG, mix, and br0 have turned serious mode on the past 2 weeks and have been scrimming a lot. I would say at this point if you guys make anything other than 4th place, it would be a massive upset...and i'm not saying that to be negative, just realistic. To your point 4, you say you have 2 legit losses against the LAN teams - the problem is you have no wins against them. I think that's the main reason why a lot of people are kinda antsy about the situation. LAN is the real time for a team to shine, so i hope you guys pull it together and put on a show. I don't want to see anyone get blown out of the water...the more competitive the more fun it is for everyone.

The only thing i think the community deserves to know is that everyone from your roster is 100% going (if i missed that in a prior post i apologize)- i think it would be a horrible move to pull a last minute "oops i can't make it to LAN"...especially with community donations in the pool. If what kermit's post says is true however, give them a chance and stop with the negativity.

the only way to have fun is winning? you are confused about the feeling you get when you win and the feeling you get when you play and enjoy the game
i remember i had more fun when my team was shit
do you think the chess club didnt know before the season started that their chances were low ?
who needs an entire season to find out that there is 2 nearly impossible to defeat (atm)
if you dont want to try to be the best just stop playing and enjoy the life
some people lacks of competitive spirit
btw im not saying that the chess club doesnt care of they dont want to try and of course they should take care of their irl stuff in the first place

This isn't communism man, you voluntarily donated for them to go. If it's a waste to you then you should not have donated to them.

People donated with the valid assumption that Chess Club actually cared about going and doing well.

I won't comment on the specifics of this particular situation, except to say it gives me some vibes (not all of them, clearly) of a greater pattern (of which no one person's individual extenuations bears special weight), which I would sum up thusly:

1) Be an egotistical, albeit exceptionally talented, player (not necessarily a bad thing unto itself).

2) Season after season, form impromptu teams with your buddies, then slack off, or better yet, disband, after your first significant losses, blissfully dis-acknowledging the fact that good players do not necessarily make a good team and that perhaps, just perhaps, the ability to work together seamlessly and fluidly has more significance than 1-on-1 deathmatches.

3) In the wake of this dearth of coherence, wonder why there aren't more sponsors interacting with the league or the "teams".

4) Complain that nobody takes the sport seriously and threaten to leave, the same way a bipolar, coke-addicted wife threatens to leave her man every other week (bonus points for actually quitting, then quietly creeping back after two or three seasons).

5) Turn 30, realize you are getting older and closer to death, and decide to move on, perhaps finding a wife/husband and throwing down a triple mortgage.

6) Use the fact that the league died along with your enthusiasm as justification for writing it all off.

7) Crank out a kid or two who might just pick up mommy's/daddy's rocket launcher or scattergun and take up the passion like their parents before them.

8) Watch your progeny pull the same crap and complain about how the young are ruining everything for you.

9) Get old and die.

10) In the afterlife, decide you are somehow qualified to be somebody's Obi-Wan and fruitlessly haunt them as their mentor.

11) Complain about the living not appreciating anything.

12) Sit around for a few billion years, blame the league for the sun becoming a red giant and eating the earth.

13) Sit around like a curmudgeon as the universe continues to expand and cool and protons and neutrons fizz out of existence.

...or am I being too cynical?
