i listen to everything, whether its punk, rap/hiphop, or just straight beats, metal isn't the only thing that populates my playlists. a lot of people hate metal that much is clear, but you have a band like nirvana in your last.fm which is good, but seriously if you come into a thread for people that clearly dig aggressive music and have bands like brandnew you should probably expect to get some flack jussayin man.

the other is actually named "Bullet For My Valentine"
i guess this actually happens

While I am, admittedly, a sucker for certain metalcore bands (August Burns Red, TDWP, IKTPQ, Beneath the Sky, etc.) and typically look for more bands within the genre that, in some way, try to break from the standard, I would have to say it's probably one of the top metal sub-genres that need the least amount of talent. The one thing I'll give it are the bands being able to at least write lyrics that aren't necessarily terrible, at least on the same level as country or most rap. But, honestly, most bands of other sub-genres do it better.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6diVVUiGeY8 - This is one of my most favorite songs within the metalcore genre. It's really standard to the scene, but it's really only a favorite for the lyrics alone, as it's something I can almost completely relate to.
I don't really have a "favorite" genre for heavier music. I mean, there may be a genre that holds most of my favorite bands, but I don't necessarily like that genre the most. For example, post-hardcore. There are like 500 shitty post-hardcore bands for every 1 good band. Underoath, Before Their Eyes, Silverstein and [old] Emarosa are examples of good post-hardcore bands I really enjoy. There are some decent, older post-hardcore bands that I don't mind as well, but modern post-hardcore is more my thing.
Black metal is just... sigh. I don't know what it is, but I can't stand it really. Emperor is the only band I like, which is weird considering they are the definition of Black Metal.
95% of deathcore is fuel for scene douchebags to keep being scene douchebags. Here are good examples of deathcore you should be listening to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lM8IRKGt8ho and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20vnoiLIG04
If I had to choose a favorite sub-genre though, it'd probably either be progressive (BTBAM, Protest the Hero, etc.) or melodic and/or tech death (TBDM, The Faceless, etc).

Alright since there's a lot of metalcore in this thread and I'm trying to turn off my metal elitism, I'll just say I really dig Burst.

That's more of an exception for me though.

getting back on topic, most bands im into have been mentioned including obituary, eyehategod, carcass, immolation etc. a few others i've listened to for quite sometime would be nile, rotten sound, suffocation, cryptopsy(not 2013 without lord worm), meshuggah, emperor, electric wizard, dystopia, napalm death, hellhammer, bolt thrower, god dethroned, hate eternal, benediction, goatwhore, enslaved, iniquity, bathory, severed savior, mayhem etc etc etc
that should give you an idea, stoner/sludge is always great, straight death metal, grindcore, or even some hardcore/punk, crustpunk/anarcho black metal etc etc
i've been going to shows/concerts since i was 13, i've lost count of how many i've been to honestly...one of the first shows i went to was vision, hatebreed, shutdown, all out war. used to be a local spot by me that had a lot of hardcore/punk shows
one of the most memorable death metal shows i've ever been to was aborted, dew scented, vader, despised icon, suffocation, cryptopsy etc yes that was all in one show

Streetlight Manifesto - The Three Of Us https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfKjCkBkN6w
Brilliant ska-punk song from a brilliant band. Would not recommend purchasing this particular album though, unless it somehow gets relicensed by a different label.
In Flames - A New Dawn https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vG8--bjjNSI
I don't know much about In Flames for whatever reason, but I love this song.
Ayreon - Comatose ~ Liquid Eternity https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZygHmpY_Js
Beautiful pair of songs from my favorite progressive metal project. They go together, so it wouldn't be right just to link the heavy one.

I don't like Heavy Metal because I feel it is the opposite of what I like to do when listening to music, to relax.
I don't need to hear some satanic screaming about death, and how "angry" I should be at the rest of the world, or sad.
The genre seems to me as an outsider, very aggressive (not that you'll become aggressive of it) and also very depressing. The artist cover themselves in Tattoos of Skulls, and wear dark clothes. It's indeed really childish to me, again, as an outsider.

ExquisiteStone-paragraph of bullshit-
Don't judge a book by it's cover, I could write blasphemy about plenty of genres from a first look perspective.
I've recently started getting into these guys, they're quite new, really enjoying the drums:
