hi. i guess i'm at the age of questioning my purpose in life so that's what i'm doing. (19 in a few days).

i'm posting this here instead of reddit because
1. i only read reddit
2. i love this community
3. i feel like you guys are good with this kinda stuff. we play the same game. we interact with the same people.
4. i talk to people about this type of stuff outside of tf2, but i feel like i'm not getting much out of it.

here's a little about me. i was a b- student throughout high school. wasted a lot of time my first two years before i picked it up my last two years. that pretty much ruined my chances of getting into a decent school. i now go to a community college. i have no goals for myself. i am a b average student in community college hoping to transfer to ucsd or uci. since i have no goals for myself, i kinda defaulted to majoring in computer science. i learned a great deal of useless computer shit from my dad and i'm unsure of what i want to do for the rest of my life.

i work in a place that i don't particularly enjoy but it's not so bad. i am able to take a month off of work if i wanted to. i don't care about money. i can work 0 hours a month or i can work 112 hours a month if i wanted to. (my boss is a cool guy).

i occasionally kick it with friends. i moved away from the city where i went to high school with my parents so i can't always see my friends. most of my friends i rarely see because they all went to good schools. i guess i live a normal community college life. its a bit hard to get out and do things because i lack a car and i don't live near the people i usually hang out with. my issue isn't social anxiety. i have no problem talking to people in a social setting (parties and what not). i bring this up because that's what people usually suggest for someone in the position of a confused community college student.

the real issue is i don't have any goals in life. i figured out i don't give a shit about school but i can't figure out why. maybe being student at my age is a social norm but i feel like i need a reason for everything i do since i am more independent now. i lived on my own (with friends, not parents. i live with my parents now.) for a year and was able to manage fine, but i feel like i hit a wall. i matured A LOT in the last 2-3 years but i still have a long way to go.

tl;dr : i feel like i am in a decent position in terms of part-time work and school. i'm unsure of my goals in life. i don't care about school or work but i still do it. how can i stay motivated? i'm not particularly excited for anything in life. i have no problem going on with my life. i just WANT a reason to do so.

any help is appreciated. i will answer any serious questions.

Get a car. You have a job so it is an attainable goal. It might seem somewhat materialistic to make purchasing a large blob of metal your goal, but having a car will open up many opportunities big and small.

you're right. i haven't thought too hard about the importance of a car outside of getting to school and work. people always tell me to get a car lol. i will definitely keep that in mind. atm, i take BART (a subway-like transportation system that many people take in northern california. it's very convenient). the thing that gets me excited about a car is the ability to blast my drum n bass and be free. i actually look forward to that.

pretty much everyone goes through a stage like this. I think it's just as simple as getting yourself motivated, if you're stuck and depressed then something should change, take initiative, this is a huge part of growing up and gaining independence :D

but seriously, just take everything day by day

I'm pretty sure no one likes work so thats not a problem, i cant really relate to the fact that you dont care about money, because everything in my life revolves around making/spending money and tryin to find a comfortable balance

you have no motivation, along with the 99% of all college students, dont worry about not having goals, you say you gonna transfer to a better school, so do well in cc, transfer, graduate, and do the stuff you like (i guess thats a goal)

create small goals that may lead to something better for you in the long run. zephyr has it right, its about motivating yourself on what you want out of your life.

i don't really care about material. i'm happy with the way i look (i think i look good although there are people who might disagree haha), i'm happy with material things that i have. i think i just want a really nice car with a nice stereo. i can't figure out what else i'd do with money. all i really spend money on is food and occasionally alcohol and weed. i rarely do the latter two nowadays. i want a car.

yes! i want a car! this is one of the few things i'm very certain about atm. i just have trouble figuring out why i still go on with doing what i do. i can still do it, but i feel like i really want a reason. i was hoping some people would share their stories because i might be thinking about this type of stuff with an attitude that isn't working for me.

maybe you can spend money on better pc equipment? i guess that'd be pointless if you don't really play a whole lot, but you can get some good out of it anyway for when you do play.

a car works too. take your friends to buffalo wild wings if there's one near you. that place is always fun to eat at. take vacations whenever you can (when you have a car) that aren't like super expensive but can provide a good time. i mean there's a whole other part of this world besides the state you live in and the states connected to yours. visit it when you have the free time. i've personally never really travelled anywhere, but i have friends and former friends who have been all over the world and say that it's the greatest time they've ever had.

these might not really be goals per se, but just more or less things you can do that up your life with the money you don't really seem to want to use.

haha, i understand what you mean vile i sort of have the same situation :\ i don't have a job being that i'm younger then you but making a goal like getting a car would give you a reason to work hard for your pay check, sometimes my parents are annoyed at my lack of work ethic but the thing is i don't really care what they think because if you go through life trying to impress or even gain the approval of anyone but yourself and possibly that special somebody then you will be very unhappy and it'll feel like you don't care about much.
i used to care a lot about things but now i don't and why is my business but when i think about it there is no reason to impress people who think you aren't doing well because honestly they are downers most of the time and like to pass off the blame of being a failure onto someone who is doing great!

also, community college is nothing to be ashamed of there are some great people who graduate from them and do very well for themselves.

I wouldn't say to get a car if it isn't a necessity, or if at the moment it wouldn't benefit you the most. Still, it's a good goal.

My dad is a barber, and he gets a lot of young men in his shop that don't know what to do with themselves. His advice to them is to figure out what kind of car they want to drive, how many vacations they want to take in a year, what kind of house they want to live in and/or where, and how much they want to make per year. Then, figure out how much money you would need for all of those things, and find out what jobs would allow you to have that kind of lifestyle. Shoot for one of them.

I would say the motivation is where you want to be later on in life: having a good time, or scraping by?

It's more tolerable if you schedule your time and stick to it, so that you get important things done but still allow yourself recreation and relaxation.

There's nothing particularly wrong with not having any goals in life, especially at 19. Most of the super-motivated 19 year olds that I have met have had their identity chosen for them by parents, religious leaders, etc. I cry for them a little bit because they're doing "what's expected of them," e.g., "I'm going to be a doctor because my mom is a doctor and so was my grandpa." However, I think it's a far better decision to find that which excites you. Community college is as good a place as any to try and figure that out.

I would suggest taking pride in whatever it is you're doing. If you're doing work that you are proud of you will feel more motivated. It's easy to coast. Don't do it. Thoreau said "[t]he mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation." If you can avoid doing that then, I think, you'll be well ahead of your peers.

19? And you like drum and bass? Party time :)

I was just getting heavily into raving at that age, that was a spectacular couple of years. I suggest you party like it's 1999 because you'll be old soon :(

And honestly, there is no point to life other than to just enjoy it.

Try to think of some long-term goals as well, like what kind of job you want, what kind of lifestyle, etc. Your goals don't necessarily need to be materialistic, although that is motivating for a lot of people. But bear in mind that choosing a career path isn't always just about income (or at least it shouldn't be imo); some jobs allow for a lot more autonomy, creativity, contribution to society, etc. than others. Once you have long-term goals you can break them down into short-team goals.

I felt like you did for a while, and figuring out what I want to do in life really helped me focus on what I need to be doing now.

the problem for me is that I don't know what I want long-term

and all my short term goals I usually achieve with ease and they seem to have little reward ( and I'm not making cheapo goals either like taking the trash out

the problem for me is that I don't know what I want long-term

and all my short term goals I usually achieve with ease and they seem to have little reward ( and I'm not making cheapo goals either like taking the trash out

Don't restrain yourself to saving up for a car, remember that public transportation exists in metropolitan areas (even if it is shit in the US). Even if it meant relocating to a new area, you could still end up saving a lot of money. An unlimited rail/bus pass will always be cheaper than owning a car. Plus, you'd have the resources of a big city at your disposal.

I'm not sure if anyone has already mentioned this but one thing i have recently learned in my Junior Year of high school is that sometimes you need to do what you love. In my position, I love to make movies, and I'm really interested in Film. My parents told me i wouldn't go anywhere in life doing that but thats not the point of it. I want to pursue it because I love to do it and that's what matters.

I guess what im trying to say is that sometimes you need to do things for yourself instead of for others. I can't jump to the conclusion that your parents are forcing you to do anything or not forcing you to do anything but you might want to think about it.

Hope this helps :)

I've never had real life long "goals" and doubt I ever will. I've just had a series of obstacles in front of me that I tore through. My life has mainly been about having fun. So I'm proof that life long goals aren't required, just do what you enjoy because you only get this chance to live but once and then there is nothing...

So I personally lived it up, I did and tried everything I saw or could think of and by the time I was 26-27 I was ready to settle down and start a family. Now I have a dream house, awesome family (wife and 2 kids) of my own and life is pretty darn good. Sure, life has too much overhead but as long as you get your responsibilities taken care of things shouldn't be too hard.

I'd say what you are going through is pretty normal. I had no idea what i wanted to do with my life when i was 19. I am 27 and i've done a lot of different things already, some i liked, some things sucked.

The most important thing is to just pick something and do it.

You may not pick the best thing for yourself right away, hell, you may never really find the best thing ever, but the key is always improving, and moving forward.
