Gaming Economics 101. Interesting video. :)

I have always been interested in the idea of a "unification of platforms".

fps games arent anywhere near as interesting to watch compared to games that involve more thinking than skill, hence why chess usually has more viewers than tf2 on twitch

not gonna watch the whole thing yet. djwheat is so enthusiastic about e-sports. such an inspiration. evil geniuses is the shit!

also, it's a shame because tf2 has so much potential as a spectator e-sport. like cs, it has a strong emphasis on teamwork. like quake, it requires a lot of mechanical skill outside of "pointing and clicking".

Haven't watched yet so I can't say anything definitively, but just because one guy says it won't happen doesn't mean he's right. Even if that guy is djwheat.

More on djWheat:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRGYR5fsd6M

2GD's real talk is pretty good as well, he talks a lot about his career in esports and where he thinks its going if anyone is interested.

Been thinking about starting a tf2 version of real talk, for those who dont't know real talk is basically a 1-2 hr interview that itmejp does with esports personalities where he asks them personal questions so the community can get to know them better, was kind of wondering if anyone would be interested in this?

i watched the whole fucking thing. fuck.

go to 1:49:20 as the three questions JP asks here are the most meaningful:

question 1:
does riot supporting league of legends mean that they've already won against all other moba games trying to be the best.

question 2:
it's clear we don't have an FPS game as the dominant one in the space. what do you think about shootmania

question 3:
what are the cores of a competitive FPS

There is also a video where they (JP and djWheat) answer questions from reddit. I watched both of them all the way through..

This is an unfair comparison. Chess has been around since the middle ages, and has a much wider audience. Old men generally aren't interested in video games, while chess appeals to all ages.

However, I do believe that fps games could compete with mobas (or whatever they're called) if they had the resources those games do.

The funny thing is FPS' tend to have more resource requirements and also more impetus to acquire advanced stuff.

Almost everyone in this community has been sold on fancy mice, mouse pads, and 120 hz benq monitors. FPS games are from the point of peripherals companies and also generally hardware companies, a much bigger cash cow I'd imagine (besides those special MMO mice).

The problem is that the audience just isn't there for FPS games for whatever reason. CS is terrible for spectating, and from the little bit I watched of Shootmania it seemed to contain all of the worst things from the FPS genre for spectators. Tf2 has potential but we have to be able to put out high level content regularly and have a bit of luck with the camera person to boot in order to make an engaging product.

The other issue for us of course, is that *so many* people play mobas and starcraft competitively that they have a native audience waiting to watch all the top folks to learn their secrets - in much the same way most of tf2's top invite streamers get ~300 viewers which I would imagine are mostly comp tf2 people wanting to learn their secrets or see crazy stuff.

The best thing we can do for tf2 at the moment is just encourage more people to play in a comp environment, and to make the playing in said comp environment as easy as possible while providing them with resources to advance.
