Se7en welcomes back kaidus and Starkie

After Arctic Foxes announced their recent scout pickup in Puoskari, and the subsequent resignation of alle, reigning ETF2L champions Se7en have chosen to welcome back two familiar faces to their active roster: kaidus and Starkie.

kaidus will be off the sidelines and onto the roster (picture by Ness "[uberchain](https://twitter.com/uberchain)" Delacroix and Jasmine "[Jasbutts](https://twitter.com/Miss_Jasbutts)" Ho) kaidus will be off the sidelines and onto the roster (picture by Ness "uberchain" Delacroix and Jasmine "Jasbutts" Ho)

kaidus and Starkie have had a very successful history with the team. After the latter joined post-i55, they found a first place finish under the [R]eason Gaming banner in ETF2L Season 22 and at DreamHack Winter 2015.

With kaidus’s help outside of matches, the roster that stood after his departure went on to have a very successful 2016, winning ETF2L Seasons 23 through 25. While known as nerdRage online and later nameLess during their time competing at Dreamhack Summer 2016, they were later picked up by Crowns eSports Club for their successful first place run at i58 (which was later the inspiration behind Se7en after the roster parted ways with the Crowns org). In 2017 they were able to place 2nd at Rewind LAN and add the ETF2L Season 26 title to their trophy mantle.

Despite being heavily involved with Se7en and the roster since their conception, legendary demoman kaidus hasn’t been seen actively playing since he announced his retirement due to a wrist injury last year. While he was not actively playing, he was very much involved with coaching and analysis for Se7en.

Starkie on the other hand has been a bit more active as of late, where he played with Se7en up until their second place finish at Rewind LAN in January. After announcing his retirement last February, he was replaced by kaptain for the remainder of the ETF2L Season 26; the team would go on to complete the season and win another Premiership title.

Starkie shared his thoughts on returning to Se7en:

Pretty good.

Following the additions of the UK duo, the complete roster for Se7en is now:

  • Scout: Starkie
  • Scout: Thalash
  • Roamer: Drackk
  • Pocket: kaptain
  • Demoman: kaidus
  • Medic: Raymon

their current roster seems like a straight upgrade from the rewind lan so I'd say yes

having kaptain pocket again is ofc better as is kaido maincalling again but idk, alle is pretty fucking good at this game so it's hard to say if it's a straight upgrade

Finally someone who gets it.. that being said, despite kaidus' current form being dubious in comparison to how alle was, you can't overlook the impact that gets made by his calls, which have a lot more structure than alle's. I think because of this we will see 7 even more unchallenged this season despite the marked improvement in the skill level from the last.

peak form kaidus > alle > current kaidus

fair assessment

ignores maincalling though, which is probably kaido > alle but alle is still super good at it

How plausible is it that Kaidus will hit hold form?
Being that he hits hold form, how does Se7en compare to i58 Crowns and/or other iterations of the team?

I'd expect kaidus to get back to being the standout best demo in Europe in <2 weeks, he's always been very reliant on muscle memory so his mechanics will still be there, it's just a matter of getting back into the habits of high level play (which again won't take long as he's been doing it for so long).

Comparing 7 to i58 crowns is an interesting one.. I'd expect thalash to be nearly identical to haffi in ability, but maybe a little less disciplined - and the only team that could exploit this difference (if at all) will be froyo. Going forward though, it wouldn't surprise me if thalash became better than haffi as a result of playing with kaidus in game because he demands a lot of his players and I'd expect thalash to step up accordingly.

The main difference is in kaidus calling and playing simultaneously, whereas in crowns kaidus could call and Spudd could focus on his individual play (as far as I'm aware this was the case @ i58). Spudd was extraordinarily good at playing his individual role in the team and maximising his impact (I consider him probably a top 2 demo since nerf in this regard), and I feel like with kaidus calling he will have a tendency to take more of the teams resources and they will very much centre their play around him.

All things considered, I think they will be better at playing their current style and that will be their biggest strength. I think this iteration of the roster will be the best team of all time when it comes to controlling the pace of the game, but unless they work on adapting their style (which I'm sure they will tbh) then I still think well coordinated aggression will be too much for them. On paper they'll be the strongest team in the world (based on what I've seen) by the end of this season. If froyos roster stays stable now then it'll make for a very good matchup (if i61 happens) but it's way too early to make predictions.

The main thing with this team being so strong is you dont even need kaidus to be in his old form. The whole kaidus does some flashy as fuck play and wrecks the enemy team would just be pointless in se7en. It's not because of their playstyle its due to that his calls and gamesense are needed so much more. You have stark probably the best playmaker scout there has been and also 2 soldiers that have very very strong jumps so playmaking is already covered. The only problems I see with this roster is how well his wrist will hold up on the saturday at i61 when they will be playing all day however ive been told numerous times it probs wont be an issue.

TLDR: kaidus now with big brain and backed up by the best players > old kaidus with flashy plays

When I think of old form kaidus I mean the 6 death 11k damage kinda guy from early reason, not old kaido with the (dumb) flashy plays

And how exactly is their current style not good to deal with that?
