After weeks of development, we're happy to finally announce the launch of PugChamp! Similar to IRC channels of the past and tf2pug.me, PugChamp is a draft-organized pickup game (PUG) system, in which captains select players for their team from a pool of available players.

Of course, we're aiming to be much more than those systems, with the following major improvements already:

  • more reliable - the system will be much less error-prone, and able to recover from most when they do happen
  • fully open source - understand how things work and even contribute to our code on GitHub
  • ratings - figure out who's the real PUG champion, both in playing and in drafting
  • automated servers - servers will manage everything from start to finish
  • full substitute system - captains can request a sub through the web interface, and the system will automatically pick the most suitable player
  • admin request system - no need to have admins added on Steam when you can post a message to their Slack when there's an issue

Right now we are in an ALPHA testing period, which means that we are working out any issues that may arise with the system. However, the past week of testing has gone much more smoothly than we've expected, so hopefully there won't be too many of those to affect your PUG experience.

Thus, we'd like your help to find any bugs that are still slipping by and also give us feedback on things we can improve. We're hoping to move into a beta state soon, which will mean a launch on the main URL with the system that will be used into release. Join us on our site and stay tuned for updates.
If you'd like to help beyond testing and have something to offer (like game servers), please contact us - we're looking for all the help we can get.

Thanks for all of your support, and we hope to see you becoming the next PUG champion very soon!

Update 06/02/2016

Hey everyone, for those that were asking how they could help support PugChamp, we have set up a Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/champgg. All donations are going to be used to help support the platform on a monthly basis. If you would like to help out each month, you can use our Patreon. We are in the process of getting ready to move to beta, and with that we need to beef up our servers. We also have a paypal set up, which you can donate to pugchamp@champ.gg if you would like it to go to us directly. Patreon won't be charging until March 1st, so if you would like to see us go live quicker, please use our paypal.

Update 24/03/2016
Please use https://na.pug.champ.gg/ as we will only be using our dev site to test out changes and features.
Update 03/04/2016
We are trialing a new mix pug system aimed at players new to PugChamp and also players that just want to game. https://na.mix.champ.gg

And just to demonstrate that we're in alpha, a mistake that I made in a recent update just caused the site to crash. We're back up now.

We'll see about that. The priority is NA for now, but if we have the resources, we'll definitely do what we can.

The players and games tabs are empty if I use Firefox (I use the older v.32 though) as shown here.

Works fine in Chrome though.

There are some known issues with firefox. What happens if you use a newer version?

any chance you could work with tf.tv to implement PugChamp on the tf.tv portal/sidebar? make it possible to see who all is playing / ability to add up via tf.tv

biggest issues imo: 1.) the side bar/menu on the left takes up too much space on the screen (easy fix would to make it hidden with a drop down or along the top) 2.) each individual message in the chat takes up too much vertical space, it would be much more aesthetically appealing if each message were 1 or 2 lines max (could probably remove some of the cell padding, put the date on the same line or just put a little timestamp on the side instead of the full date)

comparing it to pugme it's not hard to tell how much wasted space there is

edit: for the love of god please make the pocket to the left of roamer, I can't be the only one who got mixed up by this

you could even just lower the font on the left menu and save a lot of space

also the blue header takes up a lot of space on smaller windows, and it would be able to see player list and player stats in a popup in the ui rather than a new tab in the browser

I have noticed something like that too. I think it has something to do with the hang up issue that is going on. I will mark it down so that it gets fixed.

Can you change the voting system to something similar to CEVO's map vetos, where each team has two map bans then it randoms out of the 3, in an attempt to not have a pug system dominated by process, snake, and gully http://i.imgur.com/lLsVc3u.png

Going to fix the map pick system so less frequent maps are able to get picked more. It is on the todo list to fix.

I like the layout of the site, will look sweet once its polished up with some graphics.

As for the rules go, I'd suggest an offclass rule and one that is actually enforced, which will make pugs less cancerous.

Unfortunately I have a number of addons I don't want to mess with by updating so someone else can probably answer with what FireFox version they have that works.

To add on to this, would it be possible to click the class names to add up as the classes too (like in pugme) rather than just the small checkboxes? It already gives a grey background to the class name when you do that so I'm guessing it's not too big of a change to do.

Another thing I forgot to mention is being able to pick people on classes they weren't added as. If one captain accidentally picks the only medic left on a non medic class (because it doesn't warn them) there isn't anything that they can do other than end the pug or play medic themselves. In pugme you can just pick someone who wasn't added on medic (as a filler) and then get a sub for them or do some sort of class switching in game.

If you plan on allowing admins to force add/remove people this could be avoided so long as admins are online consistently.

Thanks to everyone who played tonight! We certainly did not expect this much excitement the day of public launch, and we're running into server capacity issues already...

Rest assured, we are taking your feedback into consideration and making improvements - there have already been a few today, and more to come.

Thanks again for your support!
