I feel like it might be an idea to try and choose match highlights to reflect the story of the game. Some of these just seem to be a random decent play that happened that had absolutely no impact on the outcome of the match. The TF2center one is a good example of what you should aim for as it shows the team that ultimately won turning around a very difficult situation into a full wipe in their favour, but some of the others just show a player getting a kill spree who then went on to lose the match convincingly and who's "highlight" didn't make a contribution to the score or outcome.

Still a great video don't get me wrong, but also perhaps consider touching up the first 30 seconds or so though. Was not a particularly engaging start, just felt like Sideshow was reading a long list until it got into the highlights.

this is the biggest issue for me because i honestly don't think i can win no matter what i decide to do.

in the first episode, i highlighted the smaller things like a good push to win the game etc, but after talking to a bunch of people they thought that it was boring and it made the video slow. so instead in this video i tried to include only the flashiest and biggest plays. i also want to point out that you're probably the top 1% of tf2 and there's a lot of things that seem obvious or you see things in plays that others can't. so at this point it seemed to me the majority is with highlights for wow factor rather than the more subtle plays.

to put this in perspective, the highest voted 'worthy' highlight in my survey is big airshots with 83%. the highest highlight type that's along the lines of what you're asking, 'big uber' is 60% at 6th place. the third most popular highlight type is 3 or more killstreak at 73%.

i definitely understand where you're coming from and i hope there is a decent compromise people can help me settle with.

Ok this is well edited and organised but it could be a lot better. Rather than showing long versions of highlights with a heap of extraneous stuff in and then putting in a random freezeframe at the end as sideshow talks through the entire match, mute the damn casters and talk over the highlights, it would feel much more natural. You could also then work your funny titles into the script instead because as it is they look out of place and they hold up the flow of the video.

Obviously there's an added technical issue then of how to get the in game sound without the casters but there are a few ways around that. Hell you could just get someone to re-record the highlights from the demos and that way you aren't constrained by potentially bad camerawork from the live feed (not an issue now but it could be at a LAN without the 90 second delay in future). If you can't be bothered doing all that then it would still be better to just muffle the sound of the cast and talk over it, as a bonus that will convey some sense of the atmosphere.

Basically this is great and you have all the ingredients for an amazing series, you just need to cut anything that slows the pace down to get each vid really tight.

Shounicso a lot of people on reddit and yt comments are asking for highlander... besides lolhl i want to hear some people's opinion on taking it further this way.

i think it would be a fantastic way of uniting the greater competitive community with a single definitive news source. i'm sure the majority of the people here, while not being interested in highlander in general, wouldn't be opposed to having highlander news or highlights in the video. ultimately it's really up to you and everyone else involved in the creation of the project though, because it would definitely mean extra work.

If you want to do highlander as a separate show and have time then sure but the episodes are already long enough and a good portion of the audience probably doesn't care about hl at all so imho it doesn't have a place in the current show

Dontnopemute the damn castersI like the hype from them as they watch it live for the first time ;c

There's a reason most professional highlights packages don't include the live commentators. Some do just because they don't have any access to other audio, in which case they usually muffle them, and sometimes for the massive plays they include the casters' live reactions, but usually it's a much more efficient use of their time to just talk about the overall story of the game while showing big plays.

When someone like me who's spent hundreds if not thousands of hours watching this game gets bored during a supposed highlights video then you really do know something's wrong, please cut out some of the guff shounic I say this to you as an editor at heart.

I'm not sure whether these videos are meant to be quick catch-ups or semi-detailed wraps of the week in its entirety, so it's hard to write proper criticism. I've seen a few of these videos scattered around now and then but don't really follow them as they're put out, so I'm just gonna go with my initial impressions.

-snip-

I agree it's a great product and they're going the right way, but the video part itself, besides graphics, is pretty messy at times. Don't make use of the sidebar if it doesn't serve a purpose. Don't animate it when we're meant to focus on what's being shown to the left of it. Let on people for brief opinions on matches or something. If anything it'd at least be better than a few sentences and "0-5 froyotech".

Hello!

The next episode of backcap will move from the comp.tf YouTube channel to NISLT or SIN’s youtube channel. There are a bunch of stuff to talk about i’m going to get straight into it.

1. Is it the money? -- Not entirely. I can use this money to upgrade what i have so the process is smoother, but i don’t 100% need it. At worst i can go get a patreon set up, but to be clear, a portion of the money the video earns will be given to me, and a portion to SIN. This only applies to my own videos, so his content won’t get me anything, nor will his patreon. The question still stands right: Why should i take money from this? It’s either 100% ad revenue to SIN or a split between the both of us, which I hope to use towards motivation or reinvesting in production for backcap.

2. Why not stick with comp.tf? -- There’s nothing wrong with comptf and kaneco was understanding to the different things i wanted when i worked under his channel. I definitely do hope that i’ve left on good terms with Kaneco. Over the 2 episodes we had there we gained ~700 subs and an increased amount of activity to the comp.tf wiki, so i’m proud of what we accomplished.

but…

3. WHY SIN / NISLT? -- i’m right there with you when you say he spams annotations at the end of the video and it looks ass, or when he sold out to make pub ‘funny’ videos, or when he advertised ‘the hack i don’t want to name’. But through all the bullshit, we need to consider a few things:

A: he bothered to try reach out to me and get some competitive content on his channel.
B: there’s a pub community waiting to be exposed to competitive on his channel.
C: comp.tf exposes competitive to already competitive players. SIN’s channel can expose competitive to regular ol’ valve pubbers. And if we look at the numbers, he’s sitting at 444k subscribers at the moment and achieves ~80k views per video. that’s a MASSIVE leap in outreach compared to comptf’s 3k subs.

I hope you see where i’m going with this. i believe that I have an opportunity to grow this community with my work and i feel like that’s more important. To look at the bigger picture, I want to settle aside any beef we may have with SIN to reach out to a wider audience and grow competitive tf2 further.

Lastly don’t be in too much distress. In the worst case scenario, everyone hates us moving to SIN and we’ll move back to comptf. We will listen to your feedback. we do have nerds reading all the comments and reaping them together into a document to review every week. (this includes all the things people say this thread)

Thank you for reading, I will be more than happy to respond to any questions you may have regarding this situation, or others.

Ya but the turnover rate will be nowhere near that. It's a 15-20 minute video on a channel that usually features videos under 5 minutes in length that doesn't have the same producer as most other content on the channel. Additionally those people have to either follow the Twitch stream and log into twitch at a time when the stream is live or see the video at a time when the stream is live for it to make a difference to the tftv viewcount (I know that isn't all that matters but it's important to note when discussing the stream specifically). Not saying that this won't be great to help spread the word about comp tf2 but I wouldn't expect 400 more viewers let alone 40 000.

I'm no YouTube analytics professional but I really doubt 10% of people will even click the link let alone actually follow the stream and watch it at some point.
