So now we also have this particle replacer for explosions, is there any reason left to still use dx8? Besides if you have a really shitty pc?

does anyone have an opinion on how lighting commands make people harder or easier to see?

BonafideSo now we also have this particle replacer for explosions, is there any reason left to still use dx8? Besides if you have a really shitty pc?

Despite always having 300+ FPS on DX9, for some reason the game feels a lot smoother when I switch to DX8.
I also get the same effect with certain commands like mat_phong 0, fps_max 0, cl_/sv_forcepreload 1, just to name a few.

This is why I use a slightly edited version of Chris' High Frames config despite getting 200+ FPS with the High Quality config.

I think it would be great if someone could test out these differences. DX8 and DX9 I heard have different effects on different computers, but it would be great if I could have someone test this out, and confirm that its not just me.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Launch Options: -dxlevel 81 -full -w ____ -h ____ -console -novid -useforcedmparms -noforcemaccel -noforcemspd -nocrashdialog -nojoy -noipx -nocdaudio -high -64bit --heapsize 1048576

Autoexec: http://pastebin.com/A4qN0UER
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOTE: If you have less than 2GB of RAM, take out the Heapsize command.
NOTE: mat_queue_mode 2 if you have more than 2 CPU cores.

SnowshoeI have not seen this in many FPS configs. It's not in chris', or Comanglia's, so this could use some more publicity. :)

The fuck it isn't.

r_pixelfog 1 are in these CFGs I've made

http://teamfortress.tv/thread/25328/comanglia-s-config-fps-guide

The reason it isn't in my main config is I expected basically everyone to use DX 8 to begin with.

Also r_pixelfog 1 doesn't make DX 9 look like DX 8 in A LOT OF WAYS namely models, sniper scope, Jarate and Bleed. Plus their's still more fog in general in DX9 even with r_pixelfog 1 than DX 8 though only slight.

For me the crosshairs on dx8 are a bit darker and smoother, on dx9 they are more brighter and more blurry and that is why i prefer dx8 but that is just me

The purple water is because the mapper did not properly build cubemaps, not exactly a fault of dx81.

I personally prefer dx81 mostly because it removes a lot of the obnoxious shiny stuff like the killstreak weapons and some unusual effects, however it does make it harder to see when people are getting kritz'ed so it does have some slight drawbacks. Also it might be just me but the rocket smoke seems far less thick and since I use the original it helps quite a bit.

So what exactly is the difference between dx8 and using dx9 with this setting. I like the look of dx8 but I would like to see sheens on weapons, and ubers flashing near the end while keeping the higher fps dx8 gives.

Fireis there a reason to not use dx8 ?

Crashing, glitchy textures, slower alt-tabbing, no uber flade effect, less visible kritz, and on some systems lower FPS.
