ExileYeah let's get some more signups, we can't let that wonderland bastard keep winning these.

#44 i55: Three Weeks Out in News
aporiaYou have to be joking right? Even excluding my own bias, from someone that was playing at the event - the teams that won i46, i49 and i52 weren't "head and shoulders" above the rest by any stretch of the imagination. That is one of the main draws of repeated intercontinental lans in the first place - 3 years in a row there have been tournaments that any of the top teams could have walked away with on the day, and that fact leads to some of the best & most competitive tf2 played each year. Hopefully i55 is the same, and I'm super jealous of everyone lucky enough to go this year.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they just breezed through everyone - and I'm definitely not about to act like I know more than someone who was actually playing against the teams at i49 and i52. i52 definitely had some of the best tf2 I've ever seen. You guys were especially awesome, and I remember being blown away by how well IM did at i49, and being impressed with you specifically as well.

I'm saying the roster they were working with was on a different level. Just like the i49 epsilon and the i46 mixup rosters. Obviously you can't just write down names and play rock paper scissors with rosters to determine the strength of a team (if it were that linear there'd be no point in playing). At the same time, from my narrow spectator view, certain things seemed clear. While there were clutch plays being made left and right from all players, clock and b4nny showed up as easily the most dominant scout pair at that lan - and it looked like the rest of froyo was playing playing as well or better than any of their counterparts on other teams.

I don't want to get into semantics or argue that point though, because, as I said: You were there. You also have played this game in much greater volume and at much higher levels than I have. It'd be really presumptuous of me to argue something like this in depth with you in a public forum, even if I think I could present some valid reasoning to support (but not necessarily prove outright) my opinion.

That aside, personally my favorite games to watch at i52 were between you guys, mixup, and epsi - hands down.

AlkalineAnd for what it's worth, that's exactly why I said that Froyo will be the best team of all time if they win i55. There's no doubt that different teams (like Mixup and Epsi) have been extremely dominant in their times. But if Froyotech win i55, they will have gone above and beyond what any other team has done: winning 4 ESEA seasons (3 of them on LAN), GXL, i52 and i55... That would prove that they consistently have that small yet significant edge over other top teams. And in a game where there have been a myriad of superteams with periods of dominance spanning months, not years, that consistency Froyotech have the change to prove is vitally important to being named GOAT.

Don't take this as an attack on your write up, cause it isn't. Winningest =/= best. I don't necessarily think froyo isn't the best team to ever play, but calling froyo the best with the reasoning that they win i55 would be like saying Harb was the undisputed best tf2 player up to s12 because he had more lan wins than anyone else, or like saying Bill Russel is far superior to Michael Jordan (or any player since) because he has 11 rings and Jordan only has 6.

I just cant agree with this "But if Froyotech do win (and they very well might!), they won’t just be the best team in the world. They’ll be the uncontested best team of all time." for as long as I remember i49 Epsilon, which for me is still the most dominant team as long as they were in the active, that team was a beauty to watch.

I can't agree with you there. While I too think it'd be very silly to call froyo the "best team ever" if they win i55, I think it's just as silly to call i49 Epsi the best - for the exact same reason.

i46 Mixup, i49 Epsi, and i52 Froyo all have one thing in common: They have never faced another super team (or really any team with a roster comparable to their own). Even before those lans happened, you knew who was going to win. All 3 of those teams were head and shoulders above everyone else at their respective lans.

That said, I was pretty hyped (ok not really, I don't get hyped about tf2, but you get what I mean) for i55, since it was shaping up to the first international tf2lan where first place might be a question. While it sucks that SDB, Hys, and Decimate are unable to go, there are still a lot of unknowns, and because of that, I don't think there is one obvious first place team. It's unfortunate that we won't see SDB's unique and insane play-style on lan ping, but this could actually be pretty good, and might even answer some questions.

Is ascent actually good or are they just used to playing froyo?
How many times will euro casters say "duwatner" and "hayche pee?"
Can clockwork carry ash?
Can kaidus make mike and knox lose?
Who will run in and die the most? Kaidus? Alfa? Nico? It's gonna be a nail biter.
Who is sideshow really? Are we sure he isn't a girl gamer using a voice changer? What is his/her phone number? (deadbolt wants to know)

The answers to these questions and more to be revealed at i55.

It's my impression that the purpose of a review is to be informative and insightful.

#8 Afterglow's Big Jump Tutorial Series in Videos

I mean, people can SAY that knowing the advanced jump techniques is pointless/won't help you in-game, but there is a reason most soldiers in ESEA have a very limited jump portfolio, and while they have decent enough jumps, they miss out on lots of opportunities because they fail to "see" the jump, or their non-standard/on the fly jumps are just plain garbage. Seagull, Plat, and TLR, and other top soldiers could do most "advanced" jump maps without too much issue - and it showed in game.

Most roamers can't even do the optimal version of the process "fast roll-out" they love so much. They use the pillar instead of the door, and lose like 2 seconds walking - and that's the easiest non-standard roll-out by far.

owlnah man im not arguing their froyo is as good, i just dont think their peanut butter is all you're cracking it up to be

the vanilla is decent but most of their addons to the vanilla ice cream are what makes those flavors, not many of them use the vanilla as the centerpiece

i agree the chocolate is too rich at times unless you really want it

the biggest offense to me was putting cherry garcia as low as you did, the cherry ice cream is pretty good alone, the cherry chunks are too big at times but the fudge flakes are great.

the cannoli is way too low on your list for me too, that shit is really fucking good

Sorry, the froyo thing wasn't directed at you, it was more a general statement about taste subjectivity.

Cannoli was pretty good, and if they bring it back I'll definitely sample it again. My tier list isn't static - the meta does change, and sometimes flavors move up and down. For example, Americone Dream has been very effective at recent lans.

You're right about vanilla being enhanced by mix-ins, after-all, Ben and Jerry's is a mix-in focused brand. I think of them as almost a willy wonka of ice cream. Churning out crazy wacky flavors, using a high concentration of mix-ins with simple, but rich base flavors to back them.

Which other vanilla's have you tried? Which other brands do you enjoy?

Cherry Garcia is low on my list because (in my opinion) Ben and Jerry's really just isn't very good at mixing fruit and ice cream. Cherry Garcia isn't BAD, but when you've had say... Jeni's Brambleberry Crisp or Loveless Biscuits and Peach Jam; or Steve's Southern Banana Pudding you might see what I'm getting at. Ben and Jerry's fruit game is definitely capable of winning open, but it isn't high invite by a long shot, and it sure as hell isn't winning any i series lans with it's icy texture.

owlyour tiers are heavily weighted towards peanut butter which is pretty fucked up if you ask me

Good catch. However, I find that Ben and Jerry's simply does a peanut butter base really well. Their vanilla is nothing special, their chocolate is rich but often overpowering depending on what it's paired with (as is their mocha), etc. If you were to see my selections from other brands, you might say I have a caramel bias, or a vanilla bias, or even a chocolate chip bias. My tiers would have been totally different if ben and jerry's was all I ate. Of course, taste is all subjective too, but at the same time, let's be real, if you like froyo half baked as much as regular half baked, your taste buds are just pedestrian.
