#14 tablet + college? in Hardware

so far it sounds like im just going to be bringing a laptop. @applesauz&panzer, can android phones do most of the things your droid tablets can do?
edit: in other words, is there anything in particular that makes a tablet a significantly better complement than a smartphone?

@saber i hope i didn't give the impression that i'm "hellbent" on getting a tablet. i dont know a thing about them. your response is very reasonable

@panzer google results usually tell me that the transformer is a pretty good tablet for students but if i were to decide on getting a tablet what do you think makes the transformer a better option than say, an ipad or a windows tablet?

#1 tablet + college? in Hardware

My father's considering getting me a tablet computer (i hope that's what it's called) for college. Neither he nor I know anything about tablets, nor any of the accompanying OS's. There's the one on the ipad, droid, and windows 8, right? My father brought up the idea because he heard from some of his colleagues that tablets might be useful in college, and recently I've kinda heard that.
I haven't been thinking about this for very long, but i've come up with some factors to consider.

tablet vs laptop: i'm thinking that if i get a tablet, it sounds like i might be able to forgo bringing my laptop to college. This is actually the first point i'd like an opinion on - will a tablet make a sufficient replacement for a laptop in school? If it's not worth it, then i'm supposing that it follows then that if i bring a laptop there's not much point in getting a tablet. This particular point is also up in the air. also afaik i wont be gaming on a tablet, and i'm (tentatively) ok with the idea that i wont be playing tf2 or any other games. I'll probably just be reading a lot more, hopefully.

what i need it to do: COLLEGE STUFF. I'm not yet a student in college so I don't know what exactly this entails. Sometimes I feel like my peers even know a lot more of what they will be needing in college than i do, which is probably true. All i know is i need the real obvious stuff, word processing and note taking. If it helps, i'm entering as a physics major, and there's a high possibility that i might change it to something in engineering, electrical maybe. ANY COLLEGE STUDENT / GRADUATE CAN HELP ME OUT WITH THIS ONE
MUSIC. This might be stupid, but i want listening to music to be just as convenient on the tablet as it is currently on my laptop. i get a lot of music from what.cd, a private tracker, so i would very much like a tablet that can torrent. does it have to be an app or something?

I've also been hearing mixed opinions on what type of tablet works better for college. If anyone here can sort that out for me that'd be nice. If it means anything, i've never used an apple OS, not on a cpu (mac) or an iphone; i currently own a windows phone which i really don't like at all but if a windows 8 tablet happens to be a perfect fit for me i won't hesitate to get it. When my contract renews in december-ish i will probably switch to a droid phone. Price of the tablet won't be a huge issue, i think. something under like 800 bucks?
So far, those are the big considerations in my mind. If there's anything you need to ask me before offering your opinion (almost guaranteed that you'll need more info i'm betting lol) then PLEASE ask.

shit this is a prety big and demanding post. pls help prospective college student :(

#91 favorite book? in Off Topic
stringer_bellIf I had to pick just one, it would be Joyce's Ulysses, mainly because it taught me how to read beyond the words on the page. When I first started to "get" that book, it was a revelation.

i've never heard of anyone who has ever liked this book lol but i guess there has to be some1
