#96 Warhuryeah rant? in TF2 General Discussion

What makes you think there would be 10x the number playing if settings/graphics settings weren't forced? I don't have a reason not to believe that, I guess, but I've always been under the impression that lower level players (the ones you'd want to be playing and growing the system) don't really care one way or another what the graphical and network settings are. I doubt some of them even know what they are, and others don't know how to change them. Maybe more ESEA players would play matchmaking if you could customize your experience more than currently possible, but rostered ESEA players aren't the ones you want dominating the experience anyway.

#51 Poor Sportsmanship in The Dumpster
oanonobl4nkPsychological warfare has always been a part of competition???????
There's a difference between unprofessional hate and sledging. Every sport has shit talking, but in TF2 it's ridiculous. Do you see top Dota 2 or CS:GO players saying the same shit these guys are?

these "top dota 2 or csgo players" of whom you speak are people who would do the same thing rando does, but are essentially paid not to do it. games with a much larger scene than tf2 attract sponsors who do not want their names associated with "BM." you are utterly delusional if you believe that Valve sat down, had a talk with everyone, and decided they wouldn't put money into TF2 because a few invite players weren't treating the game seriously. you're looking at everything backwards; dota players didn't avoid insulting each other so that Valve could create dota 2 and show their appreciation with multi-million dollar tournaments. AS A RESULT of the money valve knew they could make with dota 2, sponsors were attracted, molding players into behaving "more professionally" for the sake of everyone involved

#9 How important is good fps? in TF2 General Discussion

lol what in the world are these responses

anything less than a 120 hz monitor is extremely bad and will dramatically hinder your gameplay. if you're going to have any fps under 120+ you better hope it's at least 60. Without 120/144 hz monitor and 144+ fps you will never unlock the potential you have and never be as consistent. being smart doesn't matter if you get out-aimed by everything you come into contact with. Before you take this game super seriously you should try to see if you can get the funds to at LEAST upgrade your computer, and more preferably both monitor and computer

#55 Official Full Tilt i58 Fundraiser in TF2 General Discussion

Yes, my point is basically that there is no risk. Especially when you consider a group of foreigners have done it on multiple occasions without any issues. The parties never take place in the hotel room; it's strictly for sleeping. You'll have fun at the venue bar, maybe go get something to eat, then taxi back in the morning. The hotel staff isn't going to knock on your door and throw the lights on just to say "haha, gotcha!" at 3 in the morning. Just use the room for what its purpose is and try to get some sleep. No one will bother you.

#52 Official Full Tilt i58 Fundraiser in TF2 General Discussion

For the sake of full transparency, we have never had more than one room on any occasion we've competed at an iSeries event, barring i46 where we were given university housing and had our own rooms. Thinking back to the most recent event, i55, the first night I went to sleep on the floor, and the second or third night carter and I wandered around the hotel all night/morning sleeping on the couches in random ballrooms and lounge areas. It's certainly not preferred at all, but in order to minimize costs we always bought one room. To say a hotel will kick you out is complete and utter bullshit, as it's been two entirely different locations we've used this strategy (England and ALSO Texas for ESEA) and we've never heard even a peep from the hotel staff about it.

#57 acceptable types of pants? in Off Topic

I've never bought a pair of pants with buttons instead of a zipper. I can't see any world where putting them on or taking them off is faster with 2 buttons instead of 1

#25 acceptable types of pants? in Off Topic

slim jeans are the best ones you can buy. step above skinny, have some bagginess to them, but not a lot. extremely baggy pants and shorts tend to look really sloppy. levi 511 for instance are a solid choice

#34 Muselk's criticism of the MyM update in TF2 General Discussion
toads_tfclckwrkfahrenheitI'm honestly still really amazed at how many people still have the "TF2 is a dead game" prerogative even though it's literally always been as popular as it ever has been.

http://store.steampowered.com/stats/

The game hasn't lost anybody because of this sentiment (even gained people arguably), but it creates a more cynical community.

lol it's even more amazing that people like you still give steam stats as a valid argument against the phrase "dead game," as if that phrase is directed at the entire 13 year old trader, hat hoarding playerbase and not the diminishing paucity of competitive interest in the game from top players and organizations alike
it's more the people who are still willing to play this game and can (could i suppose?) be introduced to competitive through matchmaking. when you still have people willing to play your game for any reason and have the ability to bring them to the shrinking competitive playerbase, the game isnt "dead."

plus most of the people who say "TF2 is daed!11!!1" are those same 13 year old hat traders you mentioned, and they don't even know about the section of tf2's playerbase that actually is dying (which is what i'd call tf2 right now, all in all.)

When you see someone like rando or someone on the forums say "dead game," it's obviously exaggerated. These people are playing the game, so it obviously isn't "dead" in that sense. It's more utilized to bring light to the situation that after several pivotal years without actual competitive growth, the game looks worse off after those 4 years than it had prior. And as the poster below me generously pointed out, the fact that the player-base you want to introduce to competitive has not grown substantially after this renaissance period of competitive TF2, it looks even less promising.

I'm not advocating the use of "dead game," but taking the term dead literally, instead of taking it for what it is, a snarky attack on the game's lack of growth for longer than you've probably watched competitive TF2, is what sparked this discussion. It really does not matter if the game has floated at the same number of players after all these years. CLEARLY, I should say, as the game hasn't benefited from it after all these years, even on a micro scale.

#9 I lost my mojo (and by mojo i mean my dm) in Q/A Help

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but that literally makes no sense. The only things that could ever be affecting your ability to hit with the same consistency you could a couple of days ago are a "bad day" (which is normally a combination of sleep issues, being tired, not nourished) or you're simply sick of playing and the lack of motivation is making you not be able to concentrate like you could a couple of days ago. Take a small break or try to find the fun in what you're doing. Otherwise, you're simply not as good as you thought you were, and even if you think they're the same shots you were going for and hitting a couple of days ago, no two situations in a 3D FPS game with movement mechanics like TF2 are ever 1:1
