The engine has little to do with whether or not a game is Quake-like or not. Unreal Tournament is one of the closest games to Quake and it's engine is completely independently developed. Source is based off GoldSrc which is moded Quake engine. Essentially Source engine is heavily modified Quake engine.

TBH you have to be pretty dumb not to see it.

You take Quake
You give 1 of the Quake weapons to each player "class"
You balance it with health pools and movement speed.
Add a healer to balance out more heavily team based gameplay.

The command i needed was tf_hud_target_id_disable_floating_health 1.

I messed with mastercoms config today. Now i cant see my teammate's HP. I put my old CFG folder back in place and deleted the mastercoms stuff but it is still doing it. Halp.
