#28 10k hours to mastery in Off Topic

something unique to esports and certain genres is that some games are more demanding than others when it comes to certain skills and the frequency at which you use them.

take a game like an arena shooter for example, that genre is very demanding in aim and movement because of the speed and frequency which you need to do those things. now look at something like a moba where you're multitasking a lot (glancing at minimap, csing, checking builds) but none of those things by themselves are particularly hard and are less frequent compared to something constant like aiming/moving in a fps.

because of matchmaking you're also matched up with players of similar skill levels, with all these things combined you have a platform for rapid skill growth.

so honestly its no wonder that people get good extremely fast, combine that with the fact that compared to some others things esports aren't very physically demanding so you can recover really fast between sessions, meaning you never really have to take rest days if you don't want to.

lol my third post in this thread sorry this topic is really interesting to me

perfect_numberRaytekas far as reaching your full potential after 10k hours i really doubt that, firstly how could such a thing even be measured?.
I think it's meant more as a pithy approximation, of course some skills will take more/less time. The point gladwell tries to make with the 10k hours is that a great deal can be accomplished with a lot of well-used time, even to the point where one's "full potential" may be reached. It's not meant to be taken literally.

yeah i agree, if you look at most invite cs players most of them have a couple thousand hours and there's a lot of variation between their skill levels

i think 10k hours is a bit much honestly but for calling yourself a 'master' i guess its justified. most people who do really impressive things probably have around something in the range of 1-4k hours

RoodYMustard overlord is over 10k and still not invite

thats all the proof i need!!

the 10k hours rule refers to deliberate practice which is quite different from ordinary practice in that its highly focused and error corrective.

as far as reaching your full potential after 10k hours i really doubt that, firstly how could such a thing even be measured? much of learning occurs during sleep where experiences are translated into neurons and their myelin sheaths (an electrical insulating material believed to be highly responsible for skill development) are reinforced along with many other things. there are also many different types of skills in a given activity, for example a tennis player must develop their physical condition, ability to read and anticipate their opponent, as well as be creative and come up with strategies and shifts in playing style on the fly. each of these things vary in complexity and difficulty for each person and measuring them all would be nearly impossible.
